Re: RN from SUNY farmingdale?

my DH just started there for his RN - he works for a hospital and had a few co-workers go there also. He's heard good things, and although its only is first semester, he's happy so far..

I don't know if that helps - but congrats on deciding to go back to school :)

Re: RN from SUNY farmingdale?

I got my RN from there many years ago. It is s 2 year F/T program or a 4 year night program. It is a very agressive and tough program. I think I carried 18 credits my first semester! What I liked about it is that you get clinical experience starting in your first semester. 4 year schools don't start clinical until the 3rd year. I'm pretty sure their passing rates on the boards are good too.

Great! Thanks, I'm trying ot get into the 1 year accelerated program, since I already have a masters degree lots of my courses apply, plus most of my credits transferred since I went to another SUNY school. I hope I can get in and if not I hope I can complete the program quickly, if not 4 years it will be!!!Chat Icon

Re: RN from SUNY farmingdale?

Hi.

I just started at Farmingdale as well in the RN program. It is a lot of work, but so far it has been doable.

I believe things have changed from years ago, because I am going part time and it will only take me 2 years to graduate. As long as you have all your prerequisites and just need the core nursing classes, you can complete the program in 2 years.

There are 4 nursing fundamental classes (with clinicals), Health Assessment, Pharmacology, Nursing Seminar, and Transition into Nursing Practice (which is just add'l clinical work). You also need Medical Microbiology and Physiological Chemistry.

So, a total of 10 classes over and above the prerequisites. As long as you take at least 2 a semester, and a couple of summer classes, you will be done in 2 years.

I honestly have not heard of Farmingdale having a 1-year accelerated program (I thought that was only at Stonybrook because at Farmingdale you are not able to get anything more than an Associate Degree in Nursing) but I could be wrong since I didn't specifically look into it.

Just want to wish you the best of luck!

I will need to check about the 1 year program, maybe it was Stony Brook,, I have been speaking to reps from different schools, so may have gotten them confused. I have most classes already done since I took pharmacology and some other courses while doing my masters at Stony Brook, thank you though, I would also be doing this program p/t since I currently work and have 3 kids, I work in a hospital so I'm hoping to do some clinicals right at the hospital. Thanks for all the info, I;m going to the open house next weeknd. So, you'll get your R.N in 2 years? Not bad, I just have to inish quick since I want to work L&D and I sort of have an "in" if I can finish soon!!! Good luck to you!!!

Re: RN from SUNY farmingdale?

No, problem...if you have any other questions, I'll be happy to try to help you.

Only bad thing for you is, at Farmingdale, you are not allowed to do your clinicals at your place of employment. So, you wouldn't be allowed to do your school work at your job (if your hospital is part of the program). I think the hospitals used right now are Winthrop, North Shore Plainview, Good Sam, Huntington, Nassau University Medical Center. There might be more, but these are the ones I've heard of so far.

I envy you...I wish I had an "in" in L&D..it seems to be the best place to work!

Best of luck!

You;re right, accelerated program is at Stony Brook only, I just spoke with my contact there. They also reviewed my transcrits and I only have to take 1 pre-req, and then the 1st semester only 2 courses, 2nd semester only 2 coursed, but 3rd and 4th semster full work load. Thank god some of y undergrad and grad work is applying to this degree.

Good for her!! She sounds liek a hard worker!! The $ is unreal, that is why I want to do it as well, 3 12 hr shifts, ands the money is icredible, I can work 7pm-7am, come home put my kids ont he bus, sleep and then be up for them when they get off the bus! It's prefect, plus I love the profession and can't wait to ehlp deliver babies!!!!! Once my kids are a little bit older I'll go onto getting my maters in nursing since I want to be a CNM, but for now, and RN is perfect!! What unit at Stony Brook does she work on? have many family members who work there.

OMG, I absolutely know a ton ofdoctors and nurses on the oncology unit, my mom worked up there for many years on the peds oncology team. Dr Parker (who is head of peds oncology) is one of my mom's closest friends, as is Cathy Culver N.P.
