Review of the Childbirth Education Class at NSUH Manhasset

DH and I did the 1-day course today. It was the Childbirth Education plus tour. Our instructor was a doula who works at NS and she was awesome. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable and well-informed, so I would say about 40% of the info was new to me, but for DH it was more like 75-80%. Both of us found it very helpful, and honestly I didn't find it silly or cheesy which I half expected. She was VERY thorough, and maybe because she is a doula but her slant was very pro-birth plans and breastfeeding which was helpful for me. She went over so many topics it was a bit much to take it but you get a very detailed book which reviews it all. She even spent a good amount of time on breastfeeding and baby basics, both of which have their own courses you can take. I definitely recommend it for first-time parents, especially for your partner or support person, because it exposes you and them to the range of what can happen and the options available to you (or the options of what may occur if different circumstances arise). I spoke to her at the beginning and explained my special high-risk situation and she was careful to point out certain things that would not apply to me and how they would be different (example: I will likely not be allowed to labor at home for very long, and I don't have a choice about getting an epi - I have to).

Overall I give the course an A and a highly recommend!

ETA: The maternity ward (especially the recovery rooms) are soooo nice. I know LIJ is supposed to be even nicer, but I can't even imagine that because NS was super nice!

Thanks for the review! I have been debating on whether to do the 1 day one and other classes or just the 1 day one. My sister-in-law is a nurse at LIJ and she said the Katz at NS is just as nice as the Katz at LIJ in her opinion. I haven't seen the 2 to compare.

No, there is a Katz at LIJ in New Hyde Park and a Katz at NSUH in Manhasset. The course is similar according to our instructor but obviously the tour and the info on policies and procedures are different.

NSUH is North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. There wing is also called Katz but it's not the same location.
LIJ Katz is Long Island Jewish in New Hyde Park.

they are the same ownership and affiliation but different physical locations. Since LIJ upgraded to the new building the hospitals are very similar as far as maternity goes.

Yes her name is Roberta Post and she was AMAZING. Due to my medical issues I don't really have the need for a doula but if I was having a regular labor and delivery I would look into using her in a heartbeat. DH said the same and he is VERY shall we say 'careful' with money, but even he thought she was awesome.

That would be funny if we were there at the same time. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping my LO comes out right on time or even a little before. I'm pretty much done with this pregnancy thing!

I'm 31 weeks and I just went. They say 4-6 weeks before your due date but the classes at that time coincide with the Jewish holidays for me so I won't be able to go then. Definitely in the third trimester, I would say anywhere after 30 weeks up to about 35-36.

That would be funny! I'm not feeling "done" just yet. I am in super nesting mode though.
