Resources/People who can help with visa issues?
I just read a terribly sad letter that one of my students (a sixth grader) wrote to Senator Clinton about her grandmother, who is 75 and dying in another country. There are issues with the woman's visa and my student is hoping that this letter can move things along. I must admit that I am unsure of the nuances of the situation beyond the fact that the family wants to bring the grandmother here and can't. My student's dad does not write in English and works long hours so my student is shouldering all this herself. I want to try and find a way to help her but I don't know where to begin. If anyone has ideas I would be very grateful.

Without knowledge of their specific situation I really couldn't say, but basically you must prove that you're not going to be a burden on the government of the country you're immigrating to. So if they can prove they can support her, then it shouldn't be a problem.
However, and this is going to sound harsh - but since you say she is ill, how long is she likely to live? Technically you can "visit" the US for up to 3 months at a time. If it's just about bringing her over to spend the rest of her time with her family, that might be a viable option. That said, if she is ill, she most likely wouldn't have access to Medicare or Social Services. Just things to consider...

I agree with Farah--she could do the tourist visa, but she'll have no health insurance or benefits here. I'm not exactly sure why she would want to die here...Maybe they could fly there to visit her? That's a simplistic answer, but I don't know how they think she'll have access to medical care here.

That's hard. She could try the travel visa, but they do enforce the three months. I know about all this from dealing with international college students, but I don't know if they would do anything beyond that since she might be a burden to the health system here.

I know a couple who arranges for green cards and maybe visas also. He says the elderly are the easiset to bring over, if they have a sponser who can afford to take care of them. I believe they charge for the service. The wife worked for INS for many years and just retired. FM me if you want the info.

It sounds like they've already started the application process and hit a snag. do you know which country she's coming from?
 for them, I know what it's like to be in one country when your loved one(s) are in another!

She's in Bangledesh. I was telling my principal about the situation, and it turns out that he knows the area congressman so hopefully that will do something.
This is SO complicated, and I feel for this kid trying to navigate it all herself. I couldn't imagine.

How old is the student?
Never mind-- I see it is a 6th grader--That is realy young. It is great of you & the principal to try & help.
It would be a shame if it is possible but they just couldn't figure it out.
