Requirements to teach MS

I'm not a teacher, but a mom of a middle schooler. I'd like to know if there is a way to see what are the requirements to teach in MS an specific subject in a NYC public school; and also if there is a way to search if a teacher complies those requirements.

Thank you!

Requirements to teach MS

A bachelors degree
A masters degree
A teaching license, which includes a set number of hours of observations, student teaching, and passing certification tests, fingerprinting, etc.
Maintence of said license by completing a certain number of hours of professional development every few years

I believe licenses are public records.

Is there a reason?

Thanks! Kind of just curious since a teacher came from our elementary school and seems with not too much experience in MS and kids/parents are not happy.

If they want to teach an specific subject, like for example ELA, do they need special certification in that subject? Also, is there a difference between being a main teacher or assistant? and if they are assistants is there a limited amount of time they can teach, or they can take over the whole lesson?

Another main question is, can an elementary school teacher or assistant or specialist go and teach in middle school? Thanks a lot! I know I have lots of questions.

Requirements to teach MS

Teaching certification generally runs k-6 and 7-12, but there are extensions for 5/6.

For k-6, I believe the certification is in elementary Ed with a focus area (but this isn't my area of certification), and for 7-12/the 5-6 extension you're certification is in a specific subject. So, a 3rd grade teacher could go on to teach 6th grade science or math.

I'm not sure the requirements for a teaching assistant, but given the job market I've only heard of them being certified. I'm also not sure of the amount of time they can teach per day, but I'm not sure if there are guidelines, as I've never had a ta

Requirements to teach MS

After a quick search teaching assistants have a different certification that runs k-12, and isn't as difficult to obtain. However, as I said, many that I know are fully certified teachers.

Requirements to teach MS

Elementary teachers are licensed 1-6 so in middle school they can teach any subject in 6th grade. They can also teach one year above and below (K and 7th) for one year out of their license.

There are no "TA's" in public school. There are paras and they sometimes run intervention programs in small groups but they don't teach a whole class of 30 something students are aren't allowed to even if they are a certified teacher because it's not in their job responsibilities unless they are paying them as a sub.

Thank you! Very helpful! What does 'Inactive' actually mean?

Inactive doesn't have a negative connotation whatsoever. The state just passed new regs that you need to begin registering your teacher certification during your birthday month beginning this school year, so nearly all teachers are "inactive" since we didn't activate our registration yet unless we have a Sept or Oct birthday.

Yes, an elementary school teacher can technically teach in a middle school. Elementary certifications are grades 1-6. In the city, that would be extended up a grade, so that teacher could potentially teach up to 7th. The city also allows you to teach 8th grade for up to 20% of your schedule under that certification. LI doesn't not have the same rules.

I personally don't agree with the city regulations because some teachers simply should not teach out of their certification area due to a lack of training/experience in that area. There are courses specific to adolescents that elementary teachers would not have taken. I also feel that any teacher in MS or HS should have the grades 7-12 certification because you are required to be certified in a specific subject area, like math or science. I would want my kids to be taught by a teacher who is highly qualified in that subject area
