Removing a tile backsplash in the kitchen

DH and I hate the tiled backsplash in our kitchen. We really want to just take the tile down and than paint the back, since we are hoping to replace the countertops by next year. Is this going to be a total disaster? Think we can do this on our own?

It could get VERY messy. When tile is put up, there's about an inch of glue that attaches it to the backerboard, so when you try to take out the tiles, the layer underneath will probably be VERY uneven. If there's no backerboard, parts of the plaster or wall may even come off. You'll probably have to scrape some of the old glue/grout off and put up new sheetrock so you have an even surface to paint over.

I agree it could get messy

it there a tile thats "hidden" that you could take off and see what it behind it

You might have to replace the tile and/or the sheetrock, if you decide to take the tile down

Re: Removing a tile backsplash in the kitchen

yeah, thinking more about it, you may ruin the countertop trying to take out hte tiles, especially if there are tiles that rest right on top of the counters. If down the road you are going to replace the countertops anyway, it may make sense to do the tiles at the same time.

I agree. Definately wait until you do the countertops. The other possible problem could be the wall behind the backsplash is not paint ready and drywall or spackling/sanding may be required. This could turn into a messy situation.
