Re: Rabbit owners

yes I have had for years. I don't know how old your daughter is but Rabbits are not the best for very young kids, because Rabbit's hate to in general to be picked up, and kids love to pick them up. Remember they are pray animals, so when you do hold them very close to your body.

They can be are great pets and they get along with other animals when socialized.

Buy a litter pan and place a layer of bedding. I always used horse pellets from agway. Cheap and lasts. Fill the pan with hay, rabbits poop etc in a pan with their hay, its normal, and that is how you litter train. Cover all electric outlets bunnies will chew wires

Only feed a small amount of pellets a day and its based on size and age, Rabbit T is a very good food. Its not recommended to use pellets with the color pieces. Buns require all types of greens but not iceberg. VERY small amounts of sweets like apple, carrots. Buns are known to be carbaholics...very bad for them and toxic.

you can brush your bunny to prevent hair balls.

Always have water and hay available 24/7

They are very social and love to be in a room with the rest of the family not outside in a cage.

Look at the site LI rabbit rescue, I was once a volunteer. LOTS of info can be found.

Cat nip and carrots has the best bunny vets around located in New Hyde park, all bunnies require a vet check, but require no shots.

PM if you have more questions.

Good luck and congrats!

PS housing: I always used a reg dog crate, one that was large enough my dog could fit in it. They like levels, so if you can add a shelf they can hop up and down your bun will be very happy

Re: Rabbit owners

I am on my second bun who is now 5. I had my first for 13 years.

It's true, most rabbits don't love being picked up. My first loved to be cuddled and would sit in my arms for hours at a time and would nip if you stopped petting her or put her down. This bunny is different. She tolerates being picked up. Enjoys being pet for a while and then hops away. They all have different personalities.

They are very social. It amazes me that people consider them cage animals. Both of my bunnies eventually (once they were trained) had the run of the house.

Litter training was super easy. Rabbits like to go to the bathroom in corners. place a small litter box in the corner of their cage. I hung the hay feeder so they could sit in the potty and eat. They take care of the rest.

DO NOT use cedar chips or cat litter. Use either rabbit litter or ferret litter. I swear by yesterday's news brand.

Again, NEVER use cedar either as litter or bedding - it can be fatal to them.

As far as vet recommendations, we see Dr. Heidi Hofer at Island Exotics in Huntington.

Oh and spay or neuter. It makes them much easier to train....

we also used to see dr hoefer. what a doll.

i would've loved to have had my bun have the run of the house but he enjoyed our wires and furniture a wee bit much for his own good. we only used to let him out when we were there to watch him in the evening.
