Questions for those with house alarms

Anyone know if you can have a home alarm system with Optimum Voice telephone? I know you couldn't in the past, but I thought it was something they were working on?

Also, what company do you use now? How much did it cost to have it installed? (avg sized cape) How much do you pay for monthly monitoring service?

My folks have Optimum and ADT.. It's just a different system that has to be installed (also more money).

Re: Questions for those with house alarms

My wife works with all the service techs. They are constantly going out to people's houses to troubleshoot phone issues with OV relating to a security system and false alarms.

It may work most of the time... but don't be surprised if you get an occasional false alarm. Get a cellular backup system just in case.

ugh - false alarms are a total PITA! In my house growing up we had an older alarm system and there is nothing worse than being woken up at 3 AM with your house alarm going off - for no friggin reason! Scares the hell out of you and annoys the neighborsChat Icon

Hmmm, I'll have to research this a bit.

What is a cell backup system - for the alarm itself? I didn't think that was an option?

Re: Questions for those with house alarms

thanks everyone - can you post prices as well? I have NO idea what costs could be involved. Did your company install for free if you signed up for a contract?

We have optimum and slomins.

I think the entire install was about 175 and I just got the bill - for three months - it was 84 dollars.

Honestly,

It completely depends upon what you get. You can negotiate with them. We did. I played hardball with the salesman. I got extras thrown in that weren't included in the price. Usually, they only cover three doors (front, back, basement) but we have 4 exterior and basement and a garage entrance so I wanted three keypads (usually only includes one) in master bedroom upstairs, and two near the exterior doors we use the most. I got the extras thrown in.

If you have a large dog (over 40 or 50lbs) the dog will trigger a hall sensor and then you must rely upon wiring all of your windows.

You may want to get a battery backup in case of a power outage. We NEVER had a false alarm go off unless we accidentally set it off ourselves Chat Icon And they called us straight away which is awesome! Price all depends on what you want in your system.

Re: Questions for those with house alarms

i have an alarm with optimum voice
only thing is that if the power goes out i think the physical alarm goes off but i am not sure if the alarm company is warned- or something to that effect

install was about $500 and the monthly maintenance is 26.95 - Standard Security

We have regualr phone service but I did ask about the optimum service as well - It was $200 more but worth it in the end... We might get it even thought we dont have optimum as a cell phone back up just in case a burgular cuts the phone lines or something you know...

I have ADT my install was alot but we did get ALOT for out money.. IMO

Re: Questions for those with house alarms

we had an alarm with optimum voice-

first of all the alarm has battery back up so if the power goes off you hear a beep and which is the switching over to the battery--- we had this happen to us once.

they did a "Radio alert" instead of phoneline alert. this is actually better because some robbers cut the phone line making a regular alarm useless to alerting the alarm company--

We used Lowitt alarms, I believe it was an extra 100 to install the radio backup.

and our monthly service was like $28 a month including radio service, and doors and windows wired.
