Question re: Off Limits Food ??

Hi Ladies
I know some are more strict than others regarding what you can / can not eat while pregnant. - But I have a friend (in her first trimester) coming for dinner this week and I want to be sure I don't serve anything she may not want to eat ......... - The only thing I know you can't have is alcohol !!! (Obviously I've never been pregnant!)

Can you help ??
Thanks !!

I would ask her, b/c there may be foods that she has an aversion to right now.

Re: Question re: Off Limits Food ??

Cold cuts
Sushi
Any fish high in mercury
Non-pasturized cheese

I know there are more, I just can't think right now!

That's a great point... in my first trimester, all I ate were bagels because I couldn't stomach anything else!

I tried that - She says she'll "eat anything I put in front of her" .......

I guess I should be fine w/ an Italian menu, as long as I skip the cold antipasto - (re: the no cold cuts response)
Thank you !!

Definitely ask what she can tolerate. During the 1st trimester, I barely went out to eat. There were too many things I couldn't stomach at all.

Other than this, I think most of the bad foods were already listed in other posts.

It's nice that you are asking about this for your friend!

Re: Question re: Off Limits Food ??

1st tri is pretty tricky for me it was anyhow. I couldn't eat meat, chicken or fish. The only think I would eat would be pasta or a rice dish of some sort. My favorite dish that I ate a lot was escarolle(sp?) and beans. I also liked eating lots of salads at that time.

Re: Question re: Off Limits Food ??

I'm going to do a focaccia bread/pizza type of thing for an appetizer (she loves all of the cold cuts in cold antipasto, so I won't be cruel and tempt her /w them)
Then I'll just do a pasta, maybe eggplant parm and meatballs/saussage and a big salad ...........I think that will cover enough in case there's something she can't eat .......right ??

It's an old wives tale that eggplant parm puts you into labor, fyi. but if she's far enough along in her 3rd trimester she might want that LOL

I would ask her and I would re-ask her the morning of the day she's coming. I remember Lipglossjunky felt GREAT at first and was bragging about not having morning sickness...she ended up on Zofran (serious meidcation) for it! She could feel fine now and by the time of your meal not so much. (or she could remain FINE)

I know for me I was never sick this pregnancy, but certain foods made me gag to be around (white bread in particular and peanut butter), one wihff and I thought I would die. I also couldn't eat a bagel no matter how hungry I was, they just tasted bad.

Certain cheeses are off limits (feta, bleu..) and something about fish ( I don't eat fish ever so I have never paid attention to which ones/why). Also, undercooked red meats are a no-no....

FORGET the eggplant parm !!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

And I WISH I had the kind of time to ask her the day she was coming - But I don't off the train from NYC until 6:45 PM - there's no way I can rework an entire menue at that point for a Friday night dinner - I can't be THAT accomodating !!! -

Yeah, cold cuts is a funny one. Some doctors will tell you to NEVER eat them. Others will say eat them in moderation. Something about a bacteria called listeria that you can get that isn't an issue if you are not pregnant, but can cause problems for the baby.

(I've eaten them occasionally throughout my pregnancy!)

I remember reading that you can heat coldcuts in the microwave to kill off any bacteria. Maybe you can just nuke and re-chill?
