Question re: Cutting the Umbilical Cord - right away or do you wait?

I read a little of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (which should really have it's own topic, we all must discuss), and it mentioned that you should ask the doctor to wait a few minutes before cutting the cord in order to let the rest of the blood flow to the baby. I think it said something about how there are essential vitamins (e.g., Iron, etc.) that are really good for the baby.

Has anyone discussed this with their doctor? Is this standard practice? If you do this, does it negate the point of storing the cord blood?

I will ask my OB at my next appointment, but I was hoping some of you might have more information on this!!

TIA!!!!!!

Re: Question re: Cutting the Umbilical Cord - right away or do you wait?

It's not standard practice with my OB.
We weren't given a choice- he just asked DH- do you want to cut the cord?
And showed him where and how to do it.

At the time I was so overwhelmed by what was going on and the whole experience, that I didn't even think twice about it.

You should talk to your doctor ahead of time. Most doctors do not delay cord clamping, but there is increasing evidence that immediate cord clamping is dangerous as the cord continues to provide vital iron rich blood to the newborn. I will be happy to send you some information and studies to discuss with your doctor if you need them.

I would love this information as well. I asked my midwife to delay the cutting of the cord but she didn't delay more than a minute. I could barely think straight because I didn't bring it up at the beginning and I had such a difficult & painful labor so I forgot to bring it up when the time came. Next time around I want to mention it to her at the start of my labor.

I told my Doc we wanted to delay the cutting of the cord until it stopped pulsing (usually 30 seconds or so) and she said that was fine. She said anything 1 minute or longer was not good.

She also said that it usually 30 seconds to cut the cord anyway with everything going on right after delivery.

I read this too and asked my OB...he said that he has gotten this question a lot lately and he is totally against it.

I cant remember what he said word for word, but he said that the umbilical chord brings nutrients to the baby, but also brings things away from the baby, like a 2 way street, and to let the blood flow in also gives the opportunity to let blood etc that the baby may need flow out. (this is how I understood what he said, he was more medical about it).

He didn't think there was a benefit, but basically said there could be a risk.

I would still ask your Dr. though, b/c I have heard of other people doing this.

If it's so beneficial for the baby, why wouldn't it be standard practice to delay the clamping??

Honestly, there are many things that would be beneficial, but they aren't standard practice. Medicine is an evolving field and many times doctors continue to practice in the manner they were taught regardless of new information -- they can be creatures of habit just like the rest of us!

I haven't discussed it with my dr. yet but I do intend to ask if this is practiced. I am for it.

That's why we need to be educated and question everything! I'm so glad this topic was brought up. I didn't know anything about it until now.

Re: Question re: Cutting the Umbilical Cord - right away or do you wait?

I actually had asked my OB about this and he said that in his professional medical opinion, there is no reason to wait more than a few seconds after birth, and that delaying for too long can be negative. He's the expert so I just went with it.

He did ask DH in the delivery room if he wanted to cut the cord, but he didn't really want to and it was all so fast, it was no big deal.

Oddly, I keep finding the little cord stump piece around (it fell out about 12 weeks ago)... I swear I threw it out that night after I showed it to DH, but it keeps popping back up. I wonder if I'm meant to keep it... so strange.

We asked the OB this question last appointment and he said the same thing. Delaying doesn't have a benefit. He also said that by the time the baby comes out there is already a delay because he will let me see the baby first then by the time he cuts it there's a few mins anyway.

i plan on asking them to wait. it is beneficial to baby to get those last few pulses of nutrients.
