Question for those whose babies STTN

What do you think did it in the end? Was it solids, different formula, etc. Especially those who had babies that didn't sleep through until 6-7 months or so.

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

For us, I think it was honestly luck. He started STTN at about 12 weeks (DD was 7 weeks) & we just continued w/ our nightly routine (& put him in the crib still awake). From 7 weeks on we never fed them in the middle of the night...last feeding was 8pm or so.

DS was the same way, and then started STTN again at about 7 months or so. Honestly, I think it was just maturation for him. I wasn't willing to CIO, so I gave him every feeding he needed, went in for the pacifier, etc., and all of a sudden it stopped. Sometimes he does now if he is teething, but it is rare (maybe 2 times every 3 weeks or so). I don't think it was the food or anything, since he had started solids a couple months before he started STTN consistently. Hang in there! Chat Icon

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

i think it was luck with us. DS was almost 12 weeks when he would start sleeping longer stretches. we didnt change the formulaor anything.

but with his last feeding we turn all the lites down so its dark in the house and make it quiet for him.

he has been going 9:30 to 6am (although sometimes he rolls over during the nite and fusses so i flip him back and he goes back to sleep.)

he's a crappy napper though, so this could be why.

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

Don't flame me or anything Chat Icon but I don't think anything affected it, because he started STTN (8-9 hours) at 8 weeks old, and he was basically being EBFed at that time with the occasional bottle of formula, but not at night, since he would fall asleep on the boob.

I can only assume that DD won't STTN until she's three Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD has been sleeping through the night since 8 weeks (now she's 7 months). To be honest, I can't say why exactly, but I can say that we tried to establish a routine early (even when she was getting up during the night before 8 weeks--with bath, music, a little rocking). Also, we make sure she naps enough during the day, even if she whines/cries a bit about it, she falls asleep for her naps which I think helps at night. Also we try to be really consistent. It also could be luck. It also could just be this particular baby. Our next one will probably be up all night Chat Icon

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

I am reluctant to post this bc she has just started sleeping better in the past few weeks, but bc she went from being a baby who slept through the night at 6 weeks to one who was up all night long from 5 months to 10 months, I am not yet willing to classify her as a baby who STTN, Bc it can change! Anyway, i did not do CIO bc I was uncomfortable with it bc I feel that if she is getting up, it is for a reason. And for her it was always either due to pain form teething or sickness, hunger -- she has always been a big baby with a big appetite-- or missing me. I find that if she does not sleep well under the following circumstances -- not eating enough during the day, not taking good naps in teh day, putting her down too early (she does well at 8:30 or so at night, or if she doesn't spend enough QT with me during the day.

Ann still doesn't do it consistently and I'm sure part of it was the schedule we kept when I was still nursing. We manage so I don'tcare when it happens! Chat Icon

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

I don't think anything has to do with a baby STTN except for them being ready to.

DD dropped her 11pm feeding at 8 weeks old, followed by her 3am feeding at 9 weeks old, and STTN since then. I just think it's whenever they are ready to. I don't think it has to do with formula, solids, etc.

We did have a nighttime routine starting very early (7/8 weeks), that we still stick to, to this day (she is now 13 months)

for us i think it was the fact that he started to sleep on his belly AND could find the binky on his own. i also weaned from BFing and he stopped looking to eat at night...i wondered if the formula/solids filled him up more? but probably the belly and the binky factor!
eta DS is 7 months this started 2 weeks ago or so.

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

DD started sleeping through the night by like 8 weeks, i think what helped was the routine that i did with her so she learned it was bedtime..im hoping that is what it is, bc when this dc comes im hoping it will be the same thing!

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

ds was drinking close to 50oz a day of forumla and i started giving him cereal in his bottle for his last feeding. he was 8 weeks.

he stayed fuller longer was eating about 30 oz a day and started to sleep thru the night. prob a coincidence but nevertheless he started sttn.

eta: ds was waking up every 2-3 hrs bc he was hungry and would drink 6 oz and scream for more so i do believe in this case that he sttn bc his belly was full

Re: Question for those whose babies STTN

Thanks everyone. We did CIO a while ago and DS goes down very well at bedtime and sleeps for about 8 hours. So I don't think it has to do with him not being able to settle himself, he's obviously doing it for the first half of the night. He just wakes anytime between 2 and 5 to eat and then usually again about 2 hours later before going back down until morning.

I've tried giving him formula during the day, and even when he eats his solids really well (which is a cr@p shoot at the moment) he still wakes to feed. I'll be darned if I can figure out how to drop these night time feeds! <sigh>
