Question for a friend - For those of you that have had a miscarriage...............

...............was the technician performing the sonogram the one to tell you there was a problem with the baby or did a doctor come in and the tech say nothing?

My friend went in at a little over 7 weeks and they didn't see the embryo, just a yolk sac. They had her come back a week later and still they saw no embryo so the tech told her she was having a miscarriage. She was concerned that the tech should not have been the one to tell her but I don't see any way around that. What do you guys think? Thanks!!!!

I knew it when I looked at the screen and I just started crying and the tech said "I'm sorry, I'm going to get the doctor."

i don't have experience with this - but a tech is NEVER permitted to give you any information at all. they can get in big trouble for it.

i had an mri of my spine & had a pinched nerve compressing my spine. the tech told me i was not allowed to leave the place until he spoke to my doctor. It was 7:00 at night and he got my doctor on the phone & it was my DOC who told me what was wrong. The tech, because of liability issues was not permitted to say a word.

Normally I would agree with you as my mom is an X-ray tech and she is never allowed to tell a patient what she sees on a film. But that being said, in the case of seeing or not seeing the baby I don't know how a technician could even get around not saying something. I know whenever we have our sonos we're always asking "where is this" and "point out that" that I don't see how they could avoid saying they see there is a problem. They aren't diagnosing "why", they are telling you what they see.....good or bad. It just seems unavoidable to me.

In all the sonograms I had, the technician would never give me any information. They always had the doctor give me bad news.

I am so sorry for your friend.

I felt something was wrong, so I had the doc be the one to to the sonogram

I am pretty sure the sono can't tell you anything

(I had a abdominal sono recently and the tech wasn't even allowed to say what she saw...?)

the person doing the sono was the dr. He told me right away, then had me get dressed and go into his office for further discussion

I suspected something was wrong, so I specifically asked the tech if everything was ok. He told me yes. Then when I came out of the exam room they told me to go into the doc's office so he could talk to me. He was the one to tell me the bad news.

I went to the hospital for spotting. They did an ultrasound and the tech said he couldn't tell us anything. The doctor came in a few hours later and told me.

When I had mine in 2000, the tech just said for me to go straight to the doctor's office. The tech did not confirm anything.

Re: Question for a friend - For those of you that have had a miscarriage...............

I just had a Miscarriage about a month ago and yes the tech did tell me there wasnt a heartbeat. No they arent supposed to tell you but come on they really cant get around that. She said I am having a hard time finding a heartbeat. I need you to come back and see Dr Wagner.
I am a Nuclear Tech and we arent supposed to tell but if I am friendly with the person and I am pretty confident in my career I will say looks good but lets let the Dr tell you- thats what he gets paid thebig bucks for and laugh HAHA.
Wouldnt you be a little suspicious if the tech didnt say anything and said you need to see the Dr then you wait and wait not knowing.. Whats worse?
