question about weight and sonogram...

went for my sonogram today. i am 35 weeks and measuring at 36 weeks. they say that the baby is about 6 lbs 5 ounces.... how accurate is this? just wondering if any of you have gone thorugh this.... i don't look like i could be carrying a 6 lb baby inside me.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

I am not sure on how accurate any of these sonograms are.
I went last week for my growth sono.
My baby was measuring 36 1/2 weeks - which is what I was at the time. But the baby's belly was measuring much smaller - the baby's belly was only measuring 34 1/2 weeks, therefore my baby was only measuring 5lbs 1oz at 36 1/2 weeks.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

My doctor told me that the weight could be a pound above or below what they tell you.

For example, with my son they told me I would have an 8 lb. baby.... he was born just shy of 7 lbs. at 6 lbs 15 oz.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

My SIL had her last sono at 39 weeks and they said she was having a baby around 8lbs....the baby was born few days later and weighted 8 lb 13oz....so they were off almost a lb....she also carried very small....

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

one day shy of 33 weeks i had an ultrasound where they stated Chat Icon was 5 pounds give or take 1. this was categorized as being in the 65th percentile and a-okay (sounded large to me, but what do i know)...

i go for another one today for comparison.

1 pound either way i think is a big difference, but it seems to be the acceptable margin of error. my dr. stated the estimate is only as accurate as the head and torso circumference measurements allow. depending on how the baby is positioned, it is apparently difficult to get these precise measurements.

ETA Update: at 36 weeks 4 days Chat Icon's new estimate is 6 pounds 12 ounces. we'll see what happens when she finally decides to show her face!

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

So basically you can't go by what the sono tells you. I am going tonight for my sono growth.

Their weight estimation is based on head circumference, length of baby & length of femur. I wish my weight could be estimated the same way.

At 34 weeks, I went in on a Saturday & was told the baby was a little over 4 lbs. By Wedneday, he was born at 6lb, 7oz.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

They can be about 1 pound either way my son measured at almost 6 lbs a few days before I gave birth and his weight at birth was 7 lb 8 ounces and theres no way he gaines almost 2 pounds in less then a week lol.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

they predicted my dd was 7 and a half pounds with a sono and an hour later she was born via csection, she was 9 pounds even.

They preduicted my daughter to be 10lbs, and had me freaked out, 3 days later she was born at 7lb 15 oz. I guess she lost weight Chat Icon

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

from what I've seen posted....they don't seem to be accurate....

My dr's did not do one for us near the end....the NP guess-timated that she was about 7 1/2 lbs and she was born 7 lbs 10 oz.

That sonogram weight prediction thing is lies...all lies!!

When I was pg with my son and I was 38 weeks and 39 weeks I had 2 sonograms to make sure he was still okay in there. I had them done at different places. One place said 7 lbs and like 3 ozs, another place said 6 or 7 lbs. After 20 hour of labor...they announced a 9 lb, 5 ozs boy. And mind you I am short (5' 4" and fairly small). I think they just estimate by the size you are b/c....my sil is a big girl and all the sonogram techs kept telling her 9 lbs, 10 lbs. Her baby was only 6! Same with my gf who is also a big girl.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

I have heard that they could be off up to a lb either way. I am 35 weks and go for a growth sono next week, anxious to see what they say but also wondering how accurate they are.

Yes, they can be off. But for my second, it was pretty accurate. At 36 weeks, they estimated 6 lb. 3 oz. and with a weight gain of 1/2 lb per week (for a total of 8 lb 3 oz. estimated at 40 weeks). She was born at 38w4d and weighed 7 lb. 11 oz which seemed to be on target.

The sonograms were not accurate with me also, they estimated her weight to be 9 lbs. 10ozs. and she was born two days early and was 7lbs. 7 ozs.

Re: question about weight and sonogram...

I sure hope they are wrong...
They told me that I'm in the 12th percentile for the baby...which right now he is 5 lbs, 5 oz and his arms and legs are measuring 32 weeks.... and that he has a chance of being a DWARF Chat Icon

My DH and I are not big... we're both 5'4... we come from tiny families... so wouldn't it make sense that we'd have a small baby????

I'm totally not going by the growth sono. I think it's a bunch of BS!!!!

(sorry... I'm angry Chat Icon)

Yep. I didn't even KNOW how to go about posting this on here... We were kind of in shock.
The sonogram doctor did. But she was just covering her a$$. They only go by the percentiles...
My regular OB just said that they had to tell us that, and not to worry... in her belief, she just thinks we're going to have a little peanut of a son and he'll be fine.
