question about sicknesses

Being that my baby is due dec 1st...I will have to assume that there will be tons of germs around the baby. How did u prevent this especially since the baby will have no shots until almost february? I will have all kinds of people near my newborn, kids, teachers, nurses etc... Anyone have any advice on pre-cautionary measures?

If possible, try to minimize the amount of people who come around the baby. Anyone who is sick/just got over a cold, etc. should not come around the baby. Everyone else should wash their hands before touching the baby and use Purell.

I agree. Also, DON'T be a germ freak! I wasn't running around sterilizing everything that hit the floor and didn't freak out if my daugther picked up a dirty leaf and tried to eat it...she didn't get her first cold until she was 2! I attribute it largely to NOT being a spaz. Yes, I bathed her and cleaned her toys periodically, but I did not go nuts if a bottle fell and the nipple hit the floor, I simply rinsed it off. If you totally isolate them from germs, the second they come in contact with some you can't avoid, they'll be sick!

Breastfeeding is one way to help your newborn with immunization against some germs and flus because it's passed from mom to baby.

It also helps if you limit the people who touch your baby's hands and face. Like some of the other posters said, I don't run around and sterilize things that fall on the floor.

Re: question about sicknesses

I dont want anyone to get me wrong...I am not a germ freak at all. What I am is concerned that the baby is born in the winter which is the worst of all months and tons of people including myself and dh will have colds etc...I just dont want to be in the hospital with a baby with bronchitis at 2 weeks. If it were summer and the baby picked up a toy that hit the floor, I wouldnt be as concerned as I am with everyone walking around with bronchitis or strep, flu etc...

Re: question about sicknesses

Just make sure everyone washes their hands before touching the baby. Ask family and friends to stay away if they have a cold.
