Question about peanut and tree nut free snacks

I want to send in a snack for DS's birthday and it has to be peanut/tree nut free (I'm sure most if not all schools are like this.)

A google search indicates oreos and Honeymaid Honey graham crackers are okay, which is fine, because he's not a cupcake person anyway.

Nuts aren't listed as an ingredient on any of these things, but can't it also be an issue if it was made in the same factory?

I guess what I am getting at is how do I know for sure these snacks are ok?

Thanks!

Oreo cookies are my "go to"

I would put a call in to the school nurse though and ask her for suggestions.

Question about peanut and tree nut free snacks

The package would be labeled if it were manufactured in a facility that shares equipment

Unfortunately, that isn't the case. To be 100% sure, you'd need to call or email the company.

Stop & Shop has cookies and cupcakes labelled peanut free, Fairway has a pack of brownies that are pn/tn free, and anything by Enjoy Life. We also eat Oreos as our go-to snack, but they recently started selling peanut butter Oreos so make sure to check the packaging to see if it's not in the same facility.

Question about peanut and tree nut free snacks

We have a little girl in our Brownie troop who is allergic. We get Oreos for the girls. This child can have things that are processed in a factory that also processes peanuts, but she can't have anything from machinery that also processes peanuts. My understanding is that some kids cannot have anything from a facility either.

Question about peanut and tree nut free snacks

DS has peanut and tree nut allergies and we don't feel safe giving him Oreos. It's totally the parent's level of comfort. Unfortunately, companies are not required to label for "made in a facility". There's a great online guide called the Snack Safely List. All snacks listed are peanut and tree nut free from trusted companies (allergy aware and label appropriately) Or, I would recommend a nut free bakery (there are a few on LI) or treats from Whole Foods that are labeled as school safe.

Talk to the teacher. If we have a birthday it has to be nut free but the children with nut allergies usually have their own snack.

Thanks all!

I ended up taking the above advice and calling the nurse who gave the ok for pretzels and Oreos.

She sent me to snacksafely.com which I think someone on here also mentioned.

I am just surprised that clearer labeling is not mandated.

Our school won't let us bring in anything for birthdays. There are 4 parties during the year where parents are assigned something to bring in. You need to tell the nurse 10 days in advance what it is to get cleared (it can only be cupcakes, fruits or vegetables).

So sad that so many kids are experiencing this life threatening allergy!

I wish DS' school didn't allow food for parties! I feel awful that he can't participate with his friends (he has a treasure box with Oreos that we provide for parties). I actually hate the class parties more b/c Oreos are a "regular" treat but he doesn't get anything special when they have the holiday parties.

OP - check labels for pretzels. Some are in the same facility as peanuts. We usually get Utz brand.
