question about newborns and formula...

How much formula is average for a 3.5 week old to take? DD was on 4 oz every 4 hours, and we just increased her to 5 oz because she was obviously still very hungry and cried like crazy and wouldn't sleep.

Is 30 oz per day way too high for a baby this age?

If she's hungry, then feed her. I don't think it's too much.

Re: question about newboens and formula...

My son was taking 4-5 ounces every 3 hours I think at that age.

I think that 4 hours apart is long...maybe that is the problem? Try moving the feeding a little closer together-I know at this age she's still waking up throughout the night but that will end soon as well (or at least be cut back a lot!)

This was my sons approximate schedule:

6am-4 ounces

9am-4 ounces

12pm-4

3pm-4

6pm-4

10pm-3 ounces

2am-3 or 4 ounces

You can see he was getting anywhere from 26-28 ounces but this was different day to day. Some days he prob consumed 24 ounces, others as much as 32!! He had quite a few growth spurts and was hungry.

By 10 weeks the 10pm and 2am feedings were gone but his 6pm I prob gave him 6 ounces and it filled his belly.

Hope eveything gets better! and do NOT worry about overfeeding. If she is hungry after an inital 4 ounces, give her 1 more ounce. then the next feeding she may not want as much. Good luck!

My ds takes 4-5 oz every feeding, and he'll be 5 weeks tomorrow. He's been eating like this for the past 2-3 weeks. If he's hungry I'm gonna give him more.

Thanks for the advice!! I am feeding her every 4 hours because that's when she wakes up. she is like clockwork - almost exactly 4 hours from her last feeding she wakes up. Should I be waking her after 3.5 hours to eat instaed of waitng for her to wake up? I've been avoiding this because all i hear in my head is "never wake a sleeping baby"....

I wouldn't wake her up for a feeding. My DD is going to be 3 months on the 25th and at 6 oz of formula now every 4 hrs. At your DD age she was eating 4 oz but I remember her wanting more for a few days. Then she went back down to 4 oz. I know what you mean when you say she wakes up like clock work. I wouldn't change her schedule to every 3 hrs if that is her body. My ped said to feed them as much as they want as often as they want because they know what they need.

You may want to try just 4 1/2 oz. She may be having a growth spurt. If she starts to spit up then make less the next time.

Good Luck

Yeah, if her schedule is up every 4 hours then don't change it..just up the amount of formula. It won't hurt...they will spit up/throw up if overfed..you'll def. know!!

Re: question about newborns and formula...

My dr. told me at the hospital to give him as much as he wants... He sometimes goes up to 5-6 oz and he is only 2 weeks old!
