PSA -Sensitive topic, Summer Infant Monitor urges parents to make sure monitors are out of children's reach, after 2 infant deaths

I just got the email from CPSC. After 2 infant deaths, Summer is addressing the issue of safety re monitors being placed too close to a child's reach in their crib.
Please read, it could save a life.

Thank you for posting this.

This makes me sick to my stomach - up until about a month ago, we had our summer monitor on the dresser next to DS' crib. The cord was loose (similar to the picture on the link). One day DS grabbed the cord and pulled the camera and I told DH we had to wall mount the camera asap. I was worried he'd break the camera or try to chew on the wire - it makes me sick to think he could have strangled himself!

We have it wall mounted now, but the cord is clipped to the wall with the clips provided with the monitor. The cord is very taught against the wall so he can't grab it.

So very sad about the babies that have died! This is a VERY good PSA!!!

Makes me think of one Oprah episode about moms and how one mom was frustrated and letting her son CIO. She ran upstairs to find he wasn't CIO but he was being strangled by the monitor cord. He did live thankfully, but I thought of her when I got the email from CPSC.

I am really sad to read this, but it is common sense to not put it within reach of an infant... Most infant deaths and injuries can be prevented with a little common sense... DS's monitor is about 3 feet from his crib. Same goes for mini-blind cords....I feel bad for these parents...So don't flame me for my comment...

You would think it's common sense, but people think it will never happen to them. I think a lot of people on this board have their cameras mounted to their crib. Hopefully after seeing this they will move them.

I hear ya...But it just strikes a nerve in me when a baby gets hurt or killed by something when just a bit of common sense could have prevented it...I feel for the parents..I do...

I was totally thinking the same thing...
however there are ALOT of people without common sense. but then whats next, every appliance that has a cord is going to need a warning to keep out of reach of baby? alarm clocks, phones, tv cords.

Eta- and for those who mount the camera to the crib- you can take duct tape and cover it so there is no exposed cord.

I think its great they (and you) are calling attention to this. A lot of parents just don't think. I have seen people put the monitor right on the crib without any attachment at all and often Chat Icon I, personally, am EXTREMELY careful with ANYTHING being near the crib that can cause harm. The monitor is so completely out of reach it is not even an issue. But, I also am careful what I hang above and next to the crib within arms length. I'm always shocked to see the heavy wood wall letters over the side of the crib or other heavy pictures that could easily be jarred into the crib by an active baby/toddler. Either way, this is SOOOOOO sad for the people this happened too - really terrible and heartbreaking.

Mine has always been mounted to a bookshelf way above and a couple of feet away from crib, and now away from ds bed..very far away. Its always been better for me, since I get a better view of him fully.

My heart just stopped reading that. Our monitor isn't near her crib at all but I'm sure there are many people out there who might have the cord near the baby. I'm so glad you posted this.

I think that's a hazard within itself. A child somehow pulling off duct tape and choking or strangling on that. Cords should not be anywhere near a crib, bottom line.

Honestly, it IS common sense, but at the same time, I had DS' camera on the dresser next to his crib and didn't realize he could even reach it until the day that he grabbed it and pulled the camera down. And before that, he was really not that mobile other than rolling a bit, never reached out of the crib. Parents may think the babies are too young to really reach for it or grab it, etc. The point is - it's important to bring attention to this so that people realize that this is a real possibility. Many prayers for those poor, poor babies. Chat Icon

I guess I'm visualizing it wrong. I was thinking if you ran the cord on the outside of the crib railing- assuming it was wide slats...

However I don't have the Summer monitor for ds. My sister gave me the one she had. I read the articles about the cars with the backup sensor being able to detect it, and didn't want some crazy baby snatcher driving down my back. ds is close enough that I can hear him if I needed to. and our parens survived without one.

You can now buy the digital video monitors that can't be picked up by your neighbors or people driving by. They still sell the old kind, but digital monitors are available (I have one of the digital Summer video monitors).

Thank you for posting this. Our monitor is clear across the room on top of the bookshelf and is pointed down. I can't even reach it. The cord runs behind the furniture.
