Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

What's the difference? I am under the impression I will be on the shots until a BFP and then for 3 months.
I've been reading about people having the suppositories...just wondering what the difference is?

Re: Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

Not sure what the difference is. My RE practice is to keep you on the PIO's until 12weeks, unless you are having a reaction to it.

I'm having a very difficult time with them this cycle for some reason. My nurse said it's probably because my last cycle was close to this one that I could have some scar tissue from the last time. She said if it gets unbearable to let her know, but I'm strongly advised to tough it out until my pregnancy test.

Re: Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

I don't honestly know. I had 3 PIO shots and started the suppositories today - I have to keep doing them until my pg test, and then after if it's a positive.

I can't say i prefer one over the other. The PIOs were easy and not painful for me...also only once a day. These suppositories are a major PITA - not only are they messy, but I have to do it 4 times a day...I don't know which I would rather be doing...Chat Icon

Re: Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

From what I know, POI shots are stronger doses of progesterone than the suppositories. I don't think any of this is easy over a long course of time. But, hopefully it comes down to that....Chat Icon

I read on someone's blog that the suppositories can cause yeast infections. Is that true? Chat Icon I am very prone to them and I hope the doctor will take that into consideration if I have to use them in the future. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

I was able to do the suppositories last cycle when my IVF was converted to an IUI.....Very easy to use, not as messy as I've heard.

When I went over my new IVF protocol for this cycle, I asked the nurse if I could get the suppositories and she said no. She said for IVF, I must use the shots (she said it's a higher concentration than the suppositories)....BUT, she said it's not in oil, so it's not as thick. I'll be able to use the 25 gauge needles.

Re: Progesterone shots vs.suppositories?

I was on tyhe PIO until yesterday. I started at 1CC and went down to 1/2 a CC for one week. My progesterone has been in the 150 range on the suppositories and my clinic prefers to stop them at 9 weeks although that is when I started lowering my dose. The only thing I noticed with PIO is eventually you start to get lumps and you ave to try not to inject in them becasue if you do it hurts and the oil starts to run out. It was much harder for my DH then it was for me as he was teh one injecting.
