Potty Training hell
Just when I thought I had him potty trained... Jared was great for a week and then...back to pooping and peeing in his underware. He is waking up in the morning dry but peeing in his underware and pooping as well all day long.
I take him to the potty every 15-20 minutes, he sits and tells me he doesn't have to go. Then he hides and has his accidents.
I got so frustrated I took away his trains and told him that he will get them back when he goes on the potty.
Anyone have any advice??

aww, don't get frustrated with him, I think that will make it worse (not that I have ANY experience with it)
Maybe instead of taking things away, try to reward him when he DOES go...
good luck

Re: Potty Training hell
Have you tried M&M's or a sweet treat as a reward?? It's been working well over here.

This is what I'll be doing when it's time!! My mom and aunts SWEAR by the treat/reward system.
My aunt is potty training my 34 month old cousin and if the incentive of m&m's is there, he'll go everytime. It's the nighttime that is hard for them right now, but its been working during the day!

Re: Potty Training hell
We've been using money. Everytime he was going, he picked out a penny, dime, nickel or quarter and put it in his piggy bank. He was so excited. When he made poop in the potty for the first time he got a dollar. He was thrilled. He knew that when his piggy bank filled up we would go to the store and get him a toy.
Now, he could care less.
I haven't tried m&ms's yet.

Re: Potty Training hell
I'm going to have to try the candy.
We were just outside and I was asking him, do you have to make pee pee yet? I even said...let's go make pee pee. He told me he didn't have to go. I turn around and he's running with the pee flying out of his underware.

Re: Potty Training hell
The worst thing you can do is put any pressure on him - he'll automatically repel. Think of these little toddlers as mini-teenagers. You have to coax them gently into doing what you want, by making them think it's their idea
So, I would set up an incentive system. Maybe start a sticker chart, and start giving him candy (i.e. M&M, for us Skittles worked like magic) everytime he uses the potty. We gave Alex one candy for peepee, two candies for poopy.
Alex was having trouble pooping on the potty so I told her that if she went poopy on the potty I would take her to the toystore and she could pick out her very own poopy present. She still calls her pink scooter her "pink poopy scooter"
ETA - do you have any pottytraining books/dvd's? I used them to reinforce to her that using the potty is a "big girl" thing, to be proud of. I highly recommend Potty Power.

Re: Potty Training hell
Definately I'd have to say don't go back to diapers/pull-ups, no matter how MESSY it will get.
I also think that stickers/M&Ms work great. Maybe the coins/money weren't immediate enough for him. He might just need more immediate gratification.
We did sticker charts. We filled 2 all the way up and once they were filled we didn't need to do it anymore. I took her to the store and let her pick out the stickers.
Also are you keeping the toilet in the bathroom or are you bringing it outside, into the playroom, etc. with him?
As much as I hated having it in the livingroom, that's what worked. She didn't want to stop playing long enough to go into the bathroom with me. Once I put it in the LR she was fine going all day long because it was so close to her toys --- right there, she knew she could do her business quickly and then go back to playing.
Now it is in the bathroom but since we've been sucessfull for 2 weeks she's fine with going to the potty in the bathroom, she knows she's gotta do it!

Re: Potty Training hell
No, I don't have a potty training dvd. I don't think he'd be interested in it. Unless it's dinosaurs, george or thomas peeing on the potty.

Stefanie -- I have 2, the Elmo one and a Bear in the Big Blue house one.
You are welcome to borrow one or both if you don't want to buy one, just to see if he likes it.

In all seriousness, they do sell pottytraining DVD's geared just for boys so you might be able to find something like that. And like Melbernai said, we had a lot of success by just moving her potty into the living room. That way she'd sit on it while watching TV, and wouldn't have to run to far to use the potty when she had to go.

I'm going to try the m&m's and moving the potty into a different room for now.
Thank you for your suggestions.

My sister was VERY successful with my niece doing this. She loved those little gummy fishies. So my sister would only ever let her have them when she went to the potty. She got one fishy for #1 and 2 fishies for #2. She loved getting such praise from my sister along with one of her most favorite treats. She even understood that was the ONLY time she could have them. It made getting the treat after going to the potty so much more fun for her.
HTH!

Re: Potty Training hell
I think boys are harder to train then girls but I might be wrong. My dd is 2 1/2 and my sisters little boy is 3. Both started potty training a few weeks ago and my DD is fully trained now during the day but my sister is having an awful time with her son.
What I did - went straight from diapers to underwear - No pullups. I didnt do rewards just lots of praise and we used to do a potty dance when she went on the potty. She will even go on the toilet now and even wants to do it herself even though she cannot hold herself on there.
What my sister did - went to pull ups, gave lots of rewards - candy, gifts you name it and he still wont poop on the potty and has lots of accidents.
So who knows what works but the above worked for me.
I think the main thing is to stay calm and to telll him that he is a big boy now and he should go in the potty etc etc but dont take his trains away as that is too much punishment for this type of thing. He is learning and he will get it.
hang in there

Re: Potty Training hell
I had a lot of success with the sticker chart. This is a cute train one that we used. Chart
She loves putting the stickers on and when it was full she got to pick out a new toy.

Re: Potty Training hell
Maybe he just isn't ready for it! Why not pop him back into diapers for a day and see what his reaction is.
Some kids just aren't ready for it when others are! Most of my friends kids are potty trained at two and a half (that seems to be the norm here) and Noah just isn't ready!

Re: Potty Training hell
2 words: Pee Targets!!
They worked like a charm for us (as did tons of M&M's and Hershey kisses). I bought them from One Step Ahead - they were like little cut outs sheets of dinosaur shapes in like colored tissue paper. I told him he could put up to 3 in the toilet each time he had to go and he loved that - it was like a game. And at the same time, we used a sticker chart, and after he filled it up, he got to get a toy at Target, his favorite store
