Potty Training Advice needed

So my DD opened her closet this afternoon anddecided she wanted to wear her underwear. I put her in it and have been asking her like every 10 minuts if she has to go to the bathroom. She has gone a few time and has had one accident. Any advice? Should I put her in underwear tomorrow automatically when she wakes up? I am excited and nervous at the same time. TIA

I would go for it! Expect that she'll have some accidents. Keep asking her often. But the best way to do is just go for it. How old is your DD? Good Luck!Chat Icon

I would keep her in the underwear. You can get some nylon pants at BuyBuyBaby to put over her underwear if she has lots of accidents, but I don't think there is any reason to keep a kid in diapers if they are asking for underwear.

Re: Potty Training Advice needed

great sign, but don't get discouraged if she has accidents and/or wants to return to diapers...

i had been trying to potty train DD for months and after giving up, one day out of the blue she asked to wear underwear. she had tons of accidents and then went back to wanting diapers. a couple weeks later i said no more diapers, only pull-ups and it took a few days for DD to agree to this. we would try underwear here and there, but she felt more comfortable with the pull-ups.

she is now still in pull-ups and keeps them dry except for naps and overnight. i don't know when i'm going to try the underwear again because i don't want to rock the boat. we just had another DD and DD#1 starts nursery school in january so i don't want to bombard her with too many things.

every kid is different, but wanting to wear underwear is a HUGE STEP, congrats!

Re: Potty Training Advice needed

here is how we potty trained Kaitee:

First off I put her in panties, with no giving in and putting a diaper on her. I used pull ups (which I swore I would never use) for when she sleeps.

Then I bought Pooh stickers (Pooh is her favorite) and put a sticker bored next to the toilet. I told her if she pee peed in the potty she would get a sticker.

She had 4 accidents (over 2 days). I had her ’help’ me clean up her accidents (she likes to help with everything I do so she wanted to help). I think that made her realize what she did was wrong (I never yelled at her or disciplined her for the accidents).

She was day potty trained after those 2 days! We went out 5 days after we started and she held her pee and peed in a public potty! She now holds it when we are out and either waits til we get home or she goes in public potties!

I read somewhere (I can't remember where I read it) that 27 months old is the perfect age for potty training and something clicks for most kids where potty training comes easy. I am not sure if its true but it was true for Kaitee!

Re: Potty Training Advice needed

I think it all depends upon whether or not she is ready. My DS could use the potty no problem when he was 2 - he just didn't want to. He'd use it one day and we'd put him in underwear and then there would be a flood. We tried asking him every few minutes if he needed to go but that just annoyed him. He wanted to wear the underwear but didn't want to use the potty. So, I figured when he was ready, he would do it. Finally, at 3 1/2, he decided to use the potty. And he has been trained - pee and poop - from that moment on - day, naptime, nighttime - no accidents at all. It was so easy once we didn't try to force him. We don't have to ask him every few minutes if he has to go - he always tells us. He will get out of bed in the middle of the night to go. Basically, when your DC is ready, they will do it and not a moment sooner. How easy it is on you depends upon how much you push them (it was so much easier for us when I just waited for him to be ready). Good luck!

Re: Potty Training Advice needed

We kind of just went cold turkey with putting on the underwear. We'd put those vinyl covers on her at first. She'd have accidents, but she caught on. Good luck!

Re: Potty Training Advice needed

Thanks for the advice. We put on undies all day yesterday (except at nap) and she did well. Only 3 accidents. We will see how it goes today.
