Polar Express- Riverhead vs. NJ

Is the NJ one much better that it is worth the hike? We went to the one in Essex CT last year and with traffic it took FOREVER but, the kids loved it! Looking to try an authentic polar express this year and not sure if we need to go out to the one in NJ or the Riverhead one is just as good? For an almost 5 and7 yr old. Thanks!

Polar Express- Riverhead vs. NJ

We LOVED the Riverhead one. Never been to the NJ one though. The Riverhead is a trolley, not a train. My kids (6 and 14 at the time) really liked it, as did my nieces (3 and almost 2 at the time).

They had the "conductor" punching their paper tickets (I made our own really nice heavy ones from cardstock and then put a ribbon through theme and hung them on our tree, I can email you them if you want). The visit to the "North Pole" was nice, Santa was very nice and spent time with the kids and everyone got pics. Santa gave out a bell and at the end of the experience they gave out a really nice Polar Express mug.

We went bowling at the All Star after which is a super nice bowling alley. Sounds weird...Polar Express and bowling, but it was fun lol

Overall it was a great experience, and we will likely do it again! Our "elf" (who doesn't sit on a shelf) actually left the kids the tickets ;)

I have a lot of pictures, but was trying to avoid putting all the kids full on face shots on here, so hopefully that helps a little!

I've never done either if those, but have done the one in Newport RI, which is on a very authentic old style train. We LOVED it, and were able to make a whole weekend trip out of it.

Re: Polar Express- Riverhead vs. NJ

Thanks so much for the helpful info and the pics (bargain mama) - GREAT PICS! So cute! I went on their website but the link doesn't work it goes to wine tours - does anyone know when they go on sale? I just tried to call and got a message. I know the other ones go on sale Aug 1 and sell out so quickly (we missed out on NJ last year but went to the Essex one.) Don't want to miss out on this one since it is much more convenient! THANKS AGAIN Chat Icon

We did Essex last year as well but I was thinking of doing the NJ one this year instead - a bit closer than CT for us.

Should I not bother with NJ? My DS LOVED the Essex one. I don't want to disappoint him with the NJ one if it isn't as good.Chat Icon

We went a few years back so maybe it is different now, but the NJ one left a lot to be desired. We went with a large group of friends and they all felt the same way.

Last year was the first year, and they went on sale in November. I'm not sure when they start this year, but if you find out, let me know!

Here is last year's info, and the children must be able to sit on the bench seats unassisted, they don't allow infants
