Painting an Entry Door

Did anyone do this?

We bought a new entry door from Lowe's and they come in white (to my clueless surprise). We bought black paint and painted away! It looks like crap and needs to be really touched up. Everytime we paint some more, it looks even worst.

Any suggestions or tips or experiences?

Re: Painting an Entry Door

Painting my entry door was a long and difficult job, which I was not expecting either! I swear I did four coats to get it to look even. Sometimes I can still see streaks but try to pretend I don't!

Re: Painting an Entry Door

My DH took it to his shop and sprayed it with car paint. You best bet is to use a roller and the dark the color the more brush marks you are going to see.

Re: Painting an Entry Door

Did it come in white or did it come primed? Sounds like it came in white. You probably would have been best off lightly sanding it, then priming it, then painting it.

Is it possible that the door finish is oil-based paint? If so, you will have a lot of trouble trying to paint it with acrylic paint. (it's unlikely it was painted with an oil-based paint, but hey you never know!)

I agree with those who say to use a good primer first. (Try Benjamin Moore's fresh start)
