Other than conveinience, what's the point of a bassinette?

is it just to keep in your bedroom, or in another room so the baby is closer?

My friend said she'd give us hers... and then when I saw her the other day, forgot she offered it to us. I am trying to determine if it's necessary.

I will also add-- we live in a 2BR apt, and I personally feel, once my feet touch the floor, I can walk to the baby's room to attend to him/her if need be. PLUS, we are going to have a baby nurse the first two weeks-- who will be sleeping in the room with the baby anyway.

Mostly because it's a space saver. It was next to my side of the bed. I still had room to get up and move. Yet, I could see him sleep and it was an easy pickup when I BFd at night.

I Loved our bassinet. I was so sad when he out grew it and had to go in his crib.

Also, some babies feel more secure in a smaller space.

i love our bassinett, it's great to have DD right next to our bed for late night feedings. It's also nice because when DD would be asleep in the morning and I want to be in the living room, I just push the bassinet(it has wheels) into the other room and she would continue to sleep in there with me.

To be honest, I often thought the same thing with DS. We used it for about 3 weeks and then transitioned DS to the crib. DS moved around a lot when he slept (and still does). He just slept better in the crib - but of course every child is different. Also, DS's room was right next door to ours so it's not like I had to walk far. It's certainly not something you have to use. You may want to borrow your friend's bassinet just to see though.

i preferred the arms reach co-sleeper over a traditional bassinet because one can fold it up and it's portable like a pack n play. if you don't have lots of room, a bassinet is just another item that takes up space.

with DD#1 the idea was to have her in our room for a week or so before transitioning to the crib. well, it didn't work out that way because she was so colicky and kept DH up who needed to get some sleep for work, so she went straight to her crib.

with DD#2, i plan on taking the co-sleeper with me to grandma's house instead of the pack n play during the holidays since she'll only be a month old...

i think some of the pack and plays have an extra piece to make as a bassinet next to the bed as an alternative

i dont think you need it at all if the babys room is close to your room.

It's really out of convenience. The baby wakes so many times in the beginning of the night that it's nice not to have to get out of bed really. Plus, I had a c-section so it really worked out.

We had him in the bassinet for 2.5 months them moved him to the crib.

I don't know how true this is, but I've read that some babies prefer a closer, more confined space, like a bassinet, especially at the beginning. That could be why some of them have trouble sleeping in the crib right away.

I def don't think it is necessary in an apt.

I am using one on the 1st floor and that is it.

This baby is going right in the crib this time aroundChat Icon

Abby started in the bassinette in our room. The only reason Abby was not in her room the day she came home was because she had no furniture. Once she had a crib, she was in it. I agree with you. Once my feet hit the floor, it didnt matter to walk a few extra feet to her room to nurse her. I had to pee first anyway and our bathroom is not in our room. It was not inconvenient at all.

She will sleep in the pack and play in our room until her crib arrives. After that, the pack and play will be downstairs in our basement (since that's where we spend almost all our time).

Re: Other than conveinience, what's the point of a bassinette?

thanks everyone for the responses. I think I am going to skip the bassinett. I think it's nice to have, but if my friend keeps forgetting she offered it to me-- I'd rather not deal with getting it from her and I am sure as hell not buying one.

I know babies like small spaces-- so, I think in the crib, if we have the sleep positioner things, that will suffice.
