once they are off formula/bm as main source of food...how do you ensure proper nutrition

so the time has come to give up the formula and switch to whole milk.

I will still be nursing twice a day (at least) but all of the vitamins I know are in my BM and in the formula...what I have come to rely on..will be gone. whole milk just doesn't have the nutrition profile.

and with little ones being little ones, sometimes they don't eat as much as you'd like....before I had the fortified liquid back up. not anymore.

I am a NUT about him getting his proper vitamins and minerals through his food. I try to be as strict as possible to the 5 different fruits/veggies rule. but...my crutch is gone.

how do you make sure your kid(s) get their full measure of vitamins and minerals a day at this stage...the one stage?

I have to give DD a multivitamin in addition to her food because she hates vegetables. She likes fruit, but she rarely will willingly eat vegetables. It's frustrating Chat Icon

DS gets a multivitamin every day (luckily he likes them). He's not a good eater, so it's essential really.

I've talked to his pediatrician about it though, and generally, they do get more than you think they do, but a vitamin is good insurance. If DS will eat cereal, that's not bad also, most are fortified with extra vitamins and iron in some cases.

when my DS switched to milk I still gave him baby oatmeal every day as a "snack" bc it has a lot of vitamins. plus I'm not so good at remembering his mult vitamin

This is what I do as well now that she's on whole milk. We haven't looked into a multi vitamin yet...but DD is a good eater. Loves her veggies and fruits. I will probably discuss with our ped though at her 12 month checkup (which has been postponed 2x already b/c of her lingering ear infection Chat Icon)

My kid will not take the vitamin. She loves fruit so that's never an issue. She will eat peas and sweet potatoes plain. All other veggies get mixed into other foods; mashed potatoes with brccoli blended together, veggie soup, chopped broccoli in an egg omelet, etc.

On days where I feel she is not getting enough, I give her a bowl of the cereal.

i believe in soups at this age.

josh would alternate between lentil and chicken.

i knew once a day he was getting veggies, fiber and protein.
also we make a simple shepards pie often. ground meat with cream of mushroom. mixed in bowl with mashed pots, corn and green beans.

We give our DD vitamins even though she loves to eat and usually gets the proper nutrition from her food.

same!
also, lots of soft stew/soups. easy to throw veggies, beans, meat, pasta right in.

I guess.

he's really a good eater. I have ZERO complaints.

I guess I feel a little nervous since I am removing my nutritional training wheels Chat Icon

I gave him oatmeal this morning. quaker oats. not the quick ones, but not irish oatmeal either. with a few raspberries thrown in.

he's having a spinach omelet with black beans and greek yogurt for lunch.

chicken soup with swissh chard for dinner, if he makes it.

I guess that's my issue. last night he was too tired to make it to our real dinner. so I spread some soft cheese onto 12 grain bread and gave him cut up pieces along with some kiwi. it was just killing me that going forward, it won't be enough. Chat Icon

It's like you read my mind. I worry so much about his nutrition now that he's 1. He's 13 months and I just started the switch to whole milkChat Icon I'm doing it slowly too.

I even considered giving him toddler formula but DH made me realize I was crazy. DS is a really good eater, eats everything I give him and I try to give him a nice homemade variety of foods but i can't help but be worried. He does take a vitamin.

No advice, just sharing in your anxiety and worry.

I was so nervous about this too when we switched to milk but I make sure to give DD her vitamin and a few servings of fruits & veggies every day. She still gets oatmeal and fruit almost every morning, she loves it and it fills her up AND I can squeeze her vitamin into it (she won't take it from the dropper anymore). She's getting to be kinda picky about what she eats now though so I use my few staples and try to hide the veggies in there.

Jess, check out weelicious.com, she has all kinds of healthy unique (quick & easy) toddler meals and snacks. I went through every single page of that blog in the last few weeks and picked out a bunch of easy recipes I want to try.
