On a completely serious note, something is freaking me out.

My spelling.

it's horrendous. I am using the wrong tense in words, writing things that are almost the word I want but not quite (like chaNge instead of chaRge).

I have not slept a full night in, and I kid thee not, about two years. I hope that is why. otherwise, I cannot explain this. I feel like I sound drunk (or high Chat Icon Chat Icon )

and of course, I think of all the awful things that could also be causing my latent stupidity.

anyone else? should I be ordering a brain MRI. STAT? Chat Icon

There was once this really fascinating episode of dateline that tested a person's driving when intoxicated, as opposed to seriously sleep deprived, and the results showed that sleep deprivation manifests in as poor functioning as intoxication.

I'm not suprised at all...

I started taking the sleep deprivation seriously when I ran a red light when my DS was about 3 months old. Luckily, no one was hurt and he was not in the car with me.

It's tough. Even now that he is 3 and sleeps through the night, my brain still does not function the way it did pre-baby.

OMG I was going to post something like this earlier! Either I type a word that is kind of like the word I mean or completely skip words. I go back and reread my posts and always have to correct something. Since mommyhood, it's like my brain is never focused on just one thing even when I think it is Chat Icon But seriously, even when I'm in a crowded room, I feel like my eyes cant focus on one thing (like a person I'm talking too) and dart around. I think I'm going to make a doctor's appt because it freaks me out too and I'm wondering if it's neurological. I was always very "sharp" and not so much anymore Chat Icon

Yeah, I thought pregnancy brain was bad but mommy brain is much, much worse Chat Icon

On a sidenote, the fact that you haven't slept a full night in almost 2 years and still function amazes me! I've been lucky, DD started STTN pretty early on and is a good sleeper. She's only up when she's sick or teething. I haven't slept well the last 2 nights because of those pesky teeth Chat Icon and I feel like I'm on another planet! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I used to be borderline "gifted". I am now plain dumb. Babies did that to me.

This.

Seriously.

We call it mommy brain, but it can be very serious. And I know you (Ophelia) haven't had a full night of sleep in so long that it may have more of an effect.

I find myself typing the wrong word here or there, or misspelling words and it annoys me to no end because grammatical mistakes bother me in general; even more so when they're MY own grammatical mistakes, lol.

Totally - I can't think of words anymore- I find myself describing everything but the word I need. Def. mommy brain. I keep telling DH I need to go to a hotel for a good night's sleep but he thinks b/c DS STTN I should be fine - but I wake up at the sound of him even the smallest movemtn. I say I haven't slept well since the night before he was born.

Whenever I am sleep deprived, the first thing to go out the window is my spelling and the second thing is my grammar! So I'd definitely say it's the sleep deprivation. I hope you get some sleep soon!Chat Icon

Re: On a completely serious note, something is freaking me out.

I am nowhere near where I used to be, cognitively. At least that is how it feels. The no sleep is definitely a factor as is the added responsibility of having a child to care for and just every day stress! Keep track of what you are noticing and mention it to your doctor. Keep an eye out for other symptoms even if you think they may be unrelated. If your doctor thinks it can be something, he can start out with blood tests. If you want an accuarate measure of your cognitive abilities, strengths, weakness, areas where there may be decline, especially if you have a family history of cognitive disorders, see a neuropsychologist (not a neurologist) for an evaluation. Be warned that they are pricey ($2K if not more) and should not be done unless there is something you are seriously concerned about.
