OMG: first grade homework is insane!
First off.. this is Texas No common core
Secondly (as a reminder) AJ turned 6 just one month ago, most of her friends are now turning 7 in her class. She isn't the youngest but among the youngest for sure.
reading/comprehension Assessments came home today along with her homework book.
90mins required weekly online reading/writing 20mins daily reading (her reading) 20mins daily reading (us reading) 10mins daily word wall practice (spelling lists) 10-20mins daily math work 20mins daily working on the three written assignments due weekly (homework), 3 sentences with no less than 5words and one must be on one of the two books she gets from the library.
Every day is a timed math exam. focus right now is word problem solving.
Every week the 3 written assignments are due
Every Friday is a timed spelling test
Assessment on reading/comprehension monthly
Social Science is a weekly/weekly focus with a major project on Egypt in April.
They officially changed the rules and 1st graders get grades now instead of pass/fail/needs improvement.. 0-100 as well as Alpha grade for the report card A-F.
Ugh!
Round up to an hour and a half daily before bath, dinner and unwinding! All within the 2hours we have each night before she crashes. ANNOYING!

That's ridiculous. Emerson doesn't have nearly as much as that......thank god!! She has nightly HW but nothing too time consuming........yet.

OMG: first grade homework is insane!
part of me wants to take her out and put her in another class (most teachers are a lot more lax on the results vs her's) but then the other half of me says.. well she doesn't realize this is too much and so far she's doing it so might as well keep the challenge up, but I am watching her. If she slips due to pressure I'm going to hop on it!

Re: OMG: first grade homework is insane!
IMO, that amount of HW at this age is a little excessive. I didn't even assign that much work when I was teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. I think HW is important but it's not about quantity, a good quality HW assignment at that age shouldn't take all that long.

OMG: first grade homework is insane!
I remember last year looking at the 1st grade work on display in January thinking "No way" They took home a cut out, decorated it, make it their buddy and took it on vacation. Came back and wrote up an essay on what they did. Nothing more than about a dozen or so sentences. Now I see why. I think they are expected to create their own made up story by the time they get to the Egypt project.
Rough stuff, but like I said as long as its still 'fun' for her and she's not stressing on it, then I can only watch and support. I have warned the teacher and principal that the work seems to set up for failure. Test her but don't burn her out with homework in 1st grade.
So far though AJ *WANTS* the homework.. Its fun to finish first and better mama.
Can't wait for 3rd grade and standardized testing! LOL
ETA: Found out last night that stupid reading/writing app won't work on Android (they are still working on that) so I need to go buy an ipad tonight or this weekend. Because they all have Ipads at school, mama. UGH!
Anyone know how much an Ipad even is?! I mean I always wanted to get one for her but just assumed they were ridiculously expensive.

OMG: first grade homework is insane!
Doesn't help that I have no standard in my mind for elementary education at all! I was educated on military bases until 3rd grade in different states, spent 4th grade in THREE places, Cali, Houston and San Antonio, then finished Grade School at one school (which now that I think about it was very challenging with the teacher keeping me after school, taking me home and directly speaking with my father). Then moved and spent 6th in the 'good school district' before moving into the 'poor' school district where I graduated.
Homework in the 'better' districts is always heavier. At least here. I just wasn't expecting this. Then again, we can't build our schools fast enough to keep up with the demand and folks are doing anything possible to get into the schools. Craziness!
Between the financial investment needed for the kids and the taxes, its a competitive place. Just need to mentally adjust! I want her to just color, read, laugh and play. Can't do that though, at least not entirely.
Oh and AJ's scores were 'below average' for reading overall. By that they said she's not reading to the level of an midyear 1st grade student. WELL DUH! Which is why she has 90mins of that assignment weekly. Had she done even worse, it would have been more time. I hate that phrase below average. I mean 3 tiers and she's tier 2 .. I think that's average!
This mama lion has to chill out..

Re: OMG: first grade homework is insane!
That is way too much.
Many teachers will tell you the general rule of thumb is 10 minutes per night per grade.
So 1st grade = 10 minutes 2nd grade = 20 minutes 3rd grade = 30 minutes
And so on.
