OK....Its now time to CIO for naps.

Any tips? I would not mind nursing Sidney to sleep for her naps cause there is something so sweet about it BUT for the past few weeks I have not been able to put her down once she falls asleep. She will immediately wake up and howl when I put her in the crib. The 2nd nap of the day is the hardest. I have to keep her in my arms for an extra 15 minutes or so to make sure she is in a deep enough sleep and if I make a mistake and it was too early we have to start all over again. When we reach the 1 hour mark I give up. I get sooooo mad that I just put her in her pack N play and I ingore her while I come on this site to calm down. I absolutley hate that feeling of being angry at her when she is just a baby and is doing what she knows best. I have to teach her a better way.

Sooo...I figure I need some kind of routine leading up to the naps to signal to her that it is time to sleep. Right? Also, at what point do you throw in the towel and say she missed her chance to nap?

TIA

Have you read Weissbluth? I found that really helpful to figure out when naps should come. Having a routine for nap time is tricky because you could miss the drowsy window. So, my approach was just waiting for the cues, putting on music to help keep ME calm, rocking her for like 30 seconds and then putting her in the crib.

To summarize, I don't think you signal that its time to sleep -- I think you observe that baby is ready for a nap and get her down as quickly as possible.

Changed my mind....I forgot about the time change. We are already way off schedule. Don't think CIO is a good idea till we are back on track. Part of me is relieved - but I know this is something we need to do Chat Icon

Good idea. When the time IS right to give it a try, all I can do is wish you luck. We used Ferber to get Christopher sleeping at night and it worked wonderfully, but it never worked for naps.

What happened when you tried with naps? Would he just cry and cry and cry to no end? How long did you try for?? Sidney just gets so out of control around nap time that I am worried that she will cry for hours.

He just cried to no end. After about 2 weeks of him crying for an hour every day, we gave up. He pretty much decides when he's going to nap now IF he's going to nap.

Whats Weissbluth? I could use some help with naps also! Bedtime has clear signals, but naps have none! Noah usually naps while we are out and about doing stuff in the day...for instance, after playgroup on Monday, he will sleep in his pram from around 11.30 until 2.30ish, but days when we aren't out and about, he will only nap on me!

Whats wrong with babies hey? When we are tired and have the capacity to go to sleep, we do! So babies, take a tip from adults...sleep while you can!!! All day if you want to!!!
