Doctors have always told us that we have to wait until about our 20 week ultrasound to even have a shot at finding out the sex of our baby. There's a new test on the street and it's breaking all the rules. DNA Worldwide is now selling a kit that uses a simple finger prick to check the DNA in the mother's blood (when you are pregnant, a small amount of the baby's DNA passes into your blood!). If there are any Y chromosomes present in your sample, you know you are having a boy, and if there are none, then you can stop debating the merits of James vs Dylan for names. There do seem to be a few drawbacks, however. You must take the test in an environment where no males are present (presumably to prevent contamination of the sample); and the test is only 99% accurate -- compared to the 100% accuracy of seeing actual body parts on the ultrasound. The test is also a touch pricey -- but if you can't stand to wait another second (or another 14 weeks) it's an option!
