Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

Any good ideas? Hands on activities?

We are doing percents, decimals, fractions.

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

doing all three sounds like too much for one lesson.

i am assuming they know fractions, so i would teach converting a fraction to a percent. it's more concrete to them then a decimal.

do you have decimal squares in your school? they are a great visual tool to use....

ETA: converting fractions to decimals and percents is in the 5th grade curriculum at my school.... might be hard for them.

What would you like to teach specifically and maybe i can give you some better ideas?

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

fractions/decimals/percents is a post-march 4th grade standard. we just completed a survey project where the students converted their fractions to decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. (i think its evryday math 9.6) HTH

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

I will be on EDM 9.4 when observation rolls around.

I think I will stick with percents but need a hand on activity to show percents. Any ideas? Maybe get candy like Starburst and group the colors then figure out what percent of each is in the bag....maybe that is too hard?

Need a 20 minute whole group....than 20 minute group work....than 5 minute wrap up

I agree too to just pick ONE thing to focus on. Converting fractions to decimals or percents might be good. Definitely get something hands on for them....

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

you could do colored goldfish instead of the starburst. more to the bag and cheaper!

(im in the city and have a lot of vegetarian students- they cant eat gelatin products)

i just used those tiny cm cubes that are in a ton of colors in little ziplocs. i had them pre sorted and differentiated for each group of student (top/mid-hi/mid-lo/strugger)

this is a tough lesson for an observation... best of luck!

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

I was just on this unit...Unfortuntely with Every Day Math all of those things are in one lesson and usually the Principal is looking for you to stick as closely to the TM as possible. Let me look at the lesson again and get back to you...When is the observation???

I was just looking at it. That one has to do more with percents and also finding discounts at a store. Maybe you could focus on the finding the discounts at at a store...perhaps set up a mock store? My class just took that test on that unit last week and bombed that question on the test.

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

Hmmm...maybe I can set out some items at different tables with the original price and % off then have them figure out the sale price.

Should I have them work in groups? Have some cashiers to check the prices? Any ideas on how to run this?

The AP wants to see inquiry based lessons....guess where the kids are directing the learning rather than me...would this type of lesson work for that?

Oh and BTW the SAME like 10 kids bomb these unit tests all the time and I even go over the EXACT questions that will be on itChat Icon

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

idea 1-top groups could get harder percents and whole numbers. lower groups could get easier ones (like 25% of any multiple of 4).

idea 2-top groups could use only number models, while lower groups could use calculators or manipulatives.

also, stronger studetns can play the game following as an enrichment activity while you take a "guided group" or conference with other students.

Re: Observation Lesson on Percents 4th grade

I would def do something with shopping and sales.

Maybe make them coupons 20% off or 10% off

have them shop for items
