NYS vaccine law for K has changed again- I find this out 2 weeks before school starts??
OMG I am soooo frustrated right now.
When we signed DD up for K back in Feb they told us she was fine on all her shots- just missing 1 dose of the chicken pox shot which she would get at her summer well visit.
All the required shots for K was on their website and all the paperwork needed to register. Fine.
We go 2 weeks ago and get her 2nd chicken pox shot at her well visit. I bring the proof from the Dr up to the school today.
The school nurse happens to be there today when I show up, just by luck, picking up some stuff.
I show her the form and she says, yes but she is short an MMR and a polio.
I said, no the forms said 1 MMR and 3 polio by K.
She tells m that NYS has since changed the rule- since we registered in FEBURARY and now they need FOUR polios and 2 MMRs before K.
I am furious-- how can they change it mid stream like that and not inform us?
If I hadn't gone down today to drop off the missing chickenpox shot proof, and she didn't happen to be there, how would I even know?
So now, in the next 2 weeks I need to get DD 2 more shots that I would have got at her well visit 2 weeks ago. And pay a copay too.
And this is going to go over like a lead balloon with DD who thought she was done after that last shot 2 weeks ago where she freaked out like I have never seen.
UGHHHHHHHHHHHH
Just needed to vent.
I am VERY pro vaccine- but they can't keep changing the rules like this!

I wouldn't rush out and do them before the start of school. You may need certain spacing between the chicken pox and mmr. I would tell the nurse you have them scheduled with your dr.

I wouldn't rush out and do them before the start of school. You may need certain spacing between the chicken pox and mmr. I would tell the nurse you have them scheduled with your dr.
She said you need proof of at least an appointment by day 1 of school and then you have to have them by September 17 or something.
Good point on the spacing. I will call the dr tomorrow and ask.
I am just very frustrated at the changes mid stream like that.

Strange that your school district didn't notify you. We got several emails regarding this change - I have one in public and one in private and I received emails from both nurses in June.
That said - don't stress. First, the school are not required to report the vaccination status of their students until end of October. you have until then. Additionally, proof of immunity is enough and I guarantee you your DD is still immune. So, if you do want to delay the shots for whatever reason, you just need to do a blood test and show those results in lieu of getting the shot.

My DD is not due for her physical until November. she needs another polio. I had her ped write a note saying she will get it in nov. I read the DOH law and it just said they needed proof they would get it next visit,

Our school notified us in I think late May or early June that NYS just made several changes and they were sending letters to those missing something. Your school must be behind. They should have mailed you something early summer.

What if your child doesn't turn 5 till after school starts. My son turns 5 in mid October, but what if it is in November? K is a year away for us, so I will check with his ped at his 4 year visit, but I was wondering if he will have to get shots again during the year (which I will have to pay for) so that he has them all before school actually starts. I saw a PP wrote end of October, but what about kids with later birthdays? With Nursery and PreK he has the same teacher, so I just send her his updated record after his visit.

DS is not 5 yet & we go by the normal vaccine schedule (sometimes we space out over 2 visits in the beginning).
We were fine for K. Got the second chicken pox vaccine during the winter... at under 4.5 (yes, they did check for it & called me for an updated vaccine record).

DS just received his second MMR and Chicken Pox. There was no mention of a 4th does of Polio though. I will have to check his immunization records when I get home.
I would be pissed too...we didn't have to have so many when we were younger. It kills me that I have to give them this often to my children.

I wasn't informed of this.
DS was 5 in Dec and had his physical in January (same day as registration).
I know he has had 2 MMR shots (at 15 mos and 4y) not sure about Polio.
They went through is immunization record at registration thoroughly too. He had chicken pox as an infant so he didn't need the vaccine but, the exceptions didn't print out on the record (they just changed their reporting system at the ped) and it was a HUGE deal. The nurse was nice about it but, she explained that it's something that causes a red flag.

Yes! That is the info I got from the district when we registered her in February.
Now, in August, they are telling me it changed since then.
I can't deal with this. It's ridiculous

I knew this only because my dds went to prek in the same school they are going to k so letters were sent home,
but my question would be why didn't your doctor know this, im sure your child is not the only one in the practice going into k, they should be aware of this for all children

my daughter is not in K so she is all caught up on shots, but my district did send out a letter and also a mass phone call stating the changes a couple of months ago. Im sorry you are stressing.

They apparently made changes in June. They changed it back to entering kindergarten.

I think they were confused as well- because she started saying she needed the MMR as well and I told her no, the law changed and I had until 1st grade for that. She went along with what I said. Because originally it was 2 MMRs' for K. Then it went to one- for a short time- then back to 2.
Listen I am all for vaccines and about as pro vax as you can get- but WHY the back and forth? Make it one way and stick to it.

Well they were new. They made changes last year (what most people referenced. But apparently in June they made changes again (one change was to make the MMR back to kindergarten). The changes were last minute and not well written. Last year they had a nice chart. This year just a memo type thing. My school didn't even post the changes only many many announcements and put on their that that changes were made. They said they would notify families who were missing things based on the new changes by mail. IMO I agree that June is very late if they want them by school start. I think changes should be made by January 1st giving parents at least those 9 months to get what they need before the next school year.

My son is going into k this year and i just checked his school paper from june said he needed 1 mmr but i checked his vaccine paperwork and he got second one in june 2014
