No opioions...but I did just order the d40x today!

ETA. I was deciding between the D40 and D40x, and opted for the D40x. The D80 was still a little too pricey for me Chat Icon

I have the D40 and love it but if I had the money I would have bought the D80.

Can you tell me why? I'm camera shopping and the D40x was looking pretty good.

Re: nikon d40x vs. d80

I think the D40x is plenty of camera. The D80 has more options but unless you are a professional, I don't see the need.

The clarity comes from the lens and number of pixels, not the camera body itself.

Re: nikon d40x vs. d80

My DH and I are looking into buy a new camera and saw both the d40x and the d80 and Im really confussed on which one to get. I would like to get back into photography....but the camer is pricey. I would hate to spend $1,200+ on something that will be "outdated" in a year....

D40 was listed in consujmer reports as the best buy, value for the quality. D80 was ranked #2 in their SLR catagory though (Canon EOS 30D was #1), so if $ is not an object than I would go with that one.

I agree.

I bought DH the D50 last year and was thinking about the D80, but it was SO much more $ and I was already spending a lot. he loves his camera and the pics are UNREAL!

go for the D40.

We have the D40 and so far we're very happy with it. But I have nothing to compare it to other than my regular digital camera.

I know you're looking at Nikon but I just got the Canon 30D and am in love with photography all over again. It is absolutely incredible. (We already have an investment in Canon - lenses, external flash - so it made sense to go with a Canon DSLR).
