newborn's nails and scratching their face...

I feel like a horrible mother. I'm always on top of trimming Jared's nails and he had a screaming fit today and took a piece of skin off from the bridge of his nose. Is there anything I can do to put on it to care for this cut?

Re: newborn's nails and scratching their face...

you could put some neosporan (sp?) on it. File his nails...

ETA: You are NOT a bad mother. Kids nails are SHARP!

1st, You are a great mother....

2nd, babies nails are so thin and sharp, and grow so fast that it is so hard to keep on top of it.

Aidan did this too and I thought he left a permanent scar on his cheek. Everyone told me they heal fast and it did its completely gone it just seemed so bad Chat Icon

Swaddling him at night helped until he had better control of his hands.

Swaddling definately helped for Cassidy too. Their nails are sooo sharp...it is NOT your fault! Their nails grow so quickly, too!!

Don't feel like a bad mom. I swear the day I trim his nails - he still manages to scratch his face. I am not sure how he does it! It heals fast. Just keep it clean. Kevin never did it when he was real little but does it all the time now esp since his hands are always on his face.

How often are is everyone cutting the nails? It seems like every 3 days or so I have to. How do they grow so fast? Or am I not cutting them short enough?

Marissa nails grow fast as well but now I have to wait till she is sleeping in order to cut them cuz she moves all over the place and won't let me cut them.

Re: newborn's nails and scratching their face...

I always picked them or used a nail file. I could NEVER clip them and the one time we attempted, we cut his finger and said never again. Mittens never worked for us because he could never **** his fingers through them.

Now that he is 8 mos old he SCREAMS when I file them so I have to distract him....it sure doesnt get any easier....I used to do it after I nursed him and he fell asleep.

You'll find something that works for you!
Good Luck

I don't clip Andrew's nails either because I cut his skin once and I vowed never again. I try to keep up on the filing, but he manages to cut his face all the time. I can only file them when he's asleep or he's too squirmy.

And the elastic on the mittens was always too tight on his chubby little wrist, so I didn't use them.

I file my daughter's nails. She is 5 weeks old- I thought that you weren't suppose to cut their nails for a while- is that true? when can I cut them?
Her nails are very sharp and the filing doesn't really work that well
