Re: New Orleans

Just got back from there this week! It was my first time!

What a cool city.

We went on the Natchez - a steamboat that goes down the Mississippi. Was cool to be on a paddle steamboat, have a tour down the river, listen to some great live jazz, and have some food and drinks. Was 2 hours and was a bunch of fun. Neat historic boat.

We did the hop-on bus tour. Was really great! Normally those aren’t my cup of tea...but it takes you to neighborhoods other than the FQ.

Definitely take the street car up St Charles Street. Was $1.25/each way or $3 for the day. The mansions in the garden district are wild. We got off and walked Audubon Park and then walked down Magazine Street. DEFINITELY walk around magazine street for cool shops and bars and restaurants. It’s where locals go to hang out and drink/eat.

Frenchmen Street is a must do at night. We LOVED the Spotted Cat. There’s also an artisan market on Frenchmen where we got cool jewelry and art!

The Carousel Bar is fun for a drink. It’s in the Hotel monteleone. Historic and really beautiful.

We did a terrible ghost tour...so I wouldn’t recommend it. But there might be cool ones...?

Lafitte’s bar is such a great bar. I think it’s the oldest structure used for a bar in the country.

The French Market is fun to walk through. You can get some great souvenirs (make sure to bargain!) and also taste some great local food!

To the food - we didn’t get there (because we couldn’t get an early reservation), but Peche is supposed to be fantastic. We basically ate a lot of gumbo, jambalaya, and rice and beans. Oh. And bloody Mary’s. Lots of those. For FQ - check out Oceana. Great food and killer bloody mary’s.

Have so much fun! I got back on Tuesday and would love to go back!

ETA: I’m going to go against the grain and say that cafe du Monde isn’t worth it. If you’re looking for a beignet, go to Cafe beignet on royal street. Equally (if not more) tasty, and you don’t deal with a ridiculous line.

I thought I replied to this...

I also loved GW Fins.

Also liked the food in bars. Really... some of the chefs were really proud of their stews/gumbos and one place we went back to a few times.

Cafe Du Monde is a must.

I did others that were good... Bouchon, Emerils and the historic places.

Swamp tour was fun. Ghost tour was great when I did it (but I’m sure it’s just luck of the guide). Walking. Even aquarium was really well done.

I loved the dueling piano bar and anyplace with live music for night time.

I went there for work, so I didn't get to do as much sight seeing as I would have liked. Tableau was my favorite restaurant. You have to do Cafe Du Monde also. The food was amazing everywhere.

New Orleans is my favorite city.
I could go on and on. but there are some big hits for us.
Frenchman Street is fantastic. We went to 3 Muses for dinner/bar and I think the Spotted cat. There was like a 12 piece band just roaming the streets with a mob, it was great. Also a late open air market around there.
take a walking tour, I think we did the saints and sinners one and it was good.
Our favorite nice restaurant was Emeril's Delmonico, the food was fantastic. However, we had a lot of great food all over.
My other favorite was District Donuts and Sliders - great different types of sliders, and fantastic donuts.
Cafe Du Monde for Benets
Definitely have Snowballs when you're there- shaved flavored ice, there are carts and places and its a great cool down treat.
We did Mardi Gras world and enjoyed it. We did a Segway tour and enjoyed it.
we rented a car and visited a few plantations then did a swamp tour Cajun Pride Swamp tours and it was good.
We went to a cooking demo at the New Orleans School of cooking that was a lot of fun.
walking Magazine street and going in shops was fun too.

Its cliche but we also enjoyed dueling pianos at Pat OBrians too, although most of our time was spent off of Bourbon street

Its a great city if you limit your exposure to the frat party that is Bourbon street to only a little bit.

Just got back!! Loved all these tips and now I want to go back one day to go to the places mentioned here that I could not make! We loved Mr. B's restaurant. Their Gumbo Ya-Ya soup was so great. We enjoyed visiting Commander's palace, walking around the Garden District, and walking around Audobon park. We had a great time on Frenchmen Street, Preservation hall was pretty neat, Bourbon st was fun on Thursday night, crazy on Friday and Saturday. The WW II museum was very interesting. I would love to go back there as we were a bit rushed. I loved the bands that pop up on the street. We went to two plantation tours-Oak Alley and Laura. We also did a Swamp tour. That was pretty neat. We had so much fun we stayed an extra night! We stayed at the Hotel Monteleone which had the carousel bar. It was a great location. And of course the beignets!!!
