Nervous....swelling and redness in arm after shot not just injection site

DS got the DTaP vaccine on Tuesday morning. I was changing him tonight to put on his pj's and his arm from his shoulder to his elbow is swollen, red like it is sunburned and feels warm. It also feels tight I guess from the swelling. This is the 1st time he has ever gotten a shot in the arm, he always got them in the thigh and would get a tiny lump and that was it.

Is this normal? I called the ped. and am waiting for him to call me back.

Re: Nervous....swelling and redness in arm after shot

I would say the reason could be b/c the arm muscle is smaller than the leg muscle.

I had a vaccine in my arm once and it hurt alot more than elsewhere.
ETA _ i just reread and you def need to call your ped, but it could be the reason I indicated above.

What did the ped say?

he said it was normal. Apparently the 4th and 5th boosters can cause swelling in the whole limb, arm or leg, not just the injection site. But it still bothers me.

I didnt notice it earlier today when I got him dressed. But I know reaction can start 2 days or so after. I will see how it looks in the morning.

i took my ds for his checkup today, and i am not sure if i heard correctly (i had him and the 8 month old screaming) but he said the boosters can cause the arm to swell, even to a tennis abll size??? so he said if there is swelling do not get nervous just cold compresses and motrin. im looking at it now, right now ther eis a tiny bump. im not sure which shot it was however... i ant to say dtap...i think he got that and the mmr

keep an eye on it because it can turn into cellulitis. happened to my nephew 3 times Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It happens when they don't administer the vacc all the way into the muscle or some of the vacc leaks into the underlying epithelial tissue and it starts breaking down the tissue.

If the area gets bigger or stays hot and red call the ped... there can be some complications if left untreated

I didn't want to scare her but yes, cellulitis can develop (staff infection).
But it sounds like it's pretty normal, hope his arm looks better in the am.

Normal. At least it was like that for Maddie. Every shot. It goes down after WEEKS.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

How severe is it though? Is he coughing at all (a sign of breathing issues)?

My son's arm swelled after the 4th DTap too. He never had a reaction before. I read online that it was common for their arm to swell after the 4th and 5th time. It went away after a few days. It was red, warm and tight.

that was my concern...I have heard of staph infections. I would imagine it would be very sore and bothersome to him if that was the case? Wouldnt he have a fever? It doesnt seem to be bothering him.

Re: Nervous....swelling and redness in arm after shot not just injection site

Ava just turned 5 and got that shot on Monday for her kindergarten physical.

Her arm- from elbow to shoulder is red, hot and swollen. We were at the allergist today, and he said it is a common reaction. He said cellulitis is streaky and very abnormal looking.

BTW, she has been one cranky monster for the past 2 days!!!!

How is your DS today?

His arm looks 100% better over the past couple of days. It was the first time he got a shot in the arm so I didnt expect his arm to blow up like that.

That is exactly what DS's arm looked like.
