Need opinion: 10lb two week old - wake up every 3 hours to eat or let him sleep?

Just curious...my stepsister just had her baby two weeks ago. The baby will sleep for 5-6 hours without waking up, but she wakes him up nurse after 3hrs. When she wakes him up it take a good 40 mins for him to actually wake up and then he cries and cries because he's not hungry.

When he does finally get hungry he is a very efficient eater...

What is your opinion?

I never wake DD to eat...even if it's been a really long time.....let sleeping babies lie.....they will let you know when then need to eat.....DD ate about every 3-3&1/2 hrs at 2wks old.....every baby is different

My DS is a week old & sleeps (at least once a day for 5-6 hours), I let him be (although my MIL has other opinions Chat Icon ). I'm nursing him as well. Especially w/ your nephew being as big as he is, I wouldn't worry about it; however, mother knows best (or has a strong feeling about what she should be doing so I wouldn't push the issue either).

Phew ok, I said the same thing! Apparently she read some book that said to wake the baby up! I think another reason why she does it is so that she doesn't get engorged...Why she doesn't just pump in to a bag and store it is beyond me! Chat Icon

I agree, I didn't push the issue. Just merely suggested it!

Let him sleep! My ped told me that unless a baby has weight issues (meaning that it weighs less than it should) that you should not wake them up to eat.

Yes, I've had to pump & store as well when he doesn't wake up.

My ped said I should let him go no more than 4 hours, but I disagree.

I gave birth to a baby over 11 pounds and I let him sleep when he wanted to sleep.

As long as the baby is gaining enough weight and the dr has no concerns, let the baby sleep!

Unless he has a medical reason that you need to wake him (underweight or some other medical reason)- I was always told by my Ped to let them sleep they will wake and eat when they are hungry!
