Need furniture advice- w/ pic of newly painted room

K, so I FINALLY picked a paint color (only took 15 BM paint samples Chat Icon I know, I know, I'm insane! Chat Icon ......we went with Wheeling Neutral. Now that we finally decided that, I'm not sure what to do w/ furniture.

So I found a few pieces I like from Home Decorators Collection for office furniture, here's the dilemma:

DH likes the idea of just having one larger desk, but if we do that it would partially block my faux window shown here (I know it looks funny- this window was the original front of our house- on the other side of it is our bedroom- I'm thinking of hanging a cellular shade in the faux window like I'll be doing w/ the windows in the front of the house, so it all matches....or someone at work mentioned I could get pictures and put them in each pane of glass, that could be interesting. We'd be putting the desk to the right of the fake window, in the corner.

here's some pics of the room w/ the fake window shown:

here's the desk DH likes- it would overlap the fake window by 6 inches, and be as high as the middle of it, it's 58" Wide:

here's the one I'm kind of liking- it's 40" wide- so we'd still have 13 inches before it meets w/ the faux window, and to add extra storage, I'd get a side file cabinet:

the file cabinet is 38"Wx30"H (it would be flush w/ the bottom of the fake window)

and for this nook, we're definitely getting this bookcase/storage unit, it would fit perfectly:

I'm sorry this is sooooooo long.....but can you tell me what you'd do- get only the larger piece and the bookcase, and then partially block the faux window.

OR get the 3 pieces- the smaller desk, file cabinet and bookcase?

If we get the 3 pieces instead of just the 2, I kind of like that if we put a chair (for when I want to sit and read) on the other side of the file cabinet, I can use the top of it as an end table. any suggestions on this awkwardly shaped room are much appreciated!

thanks for reading all this and helping a crazy indecisive person! Chat Icon

Home Decorators Collection (www.homedecorators.com), there's a large selection- the 3 pieces I like are from the French Country line, the one DH likes is called Harwick.

I agree as well. We also have the exact same faux window situation in our office that goes into the bedroom. I made it into a mirror.

i think both desks are too "overpowering" for the space. the room has such a nice open and airy feel and the pieces are too "enclosing" i would opt for something more traditional and use bookcases for additional storage.

I like the idea of the smaller desk with the file cabinet also. It will look great. Nice bright room and great wall color!

ITA. I would go low profile on the desk and add bookcases and a small table for next to your proposed chair, for additional storage.

Re: Need furniture advice- w/ pic of newly painted room

I love how this room is coming together. Love the color. I kind of agree with some of the others. I think the Armoires are a little big for the space. This way the room wouldn't look so small. With the low openess of the tradition desk, you will feel like you have more space. You can still get the other two pieces for files and storage and then the chair in the corner. I think it would look great. Can't wait to see the room finished. I'm sure you are going to love sitting out there.

what about this one

I like your DH's choice - There are so many windows in that room I think slightly covering the faux one isn't an issue at all -

I think that both desks might be too big/boxy for the space and that something more open would be better at keeping the room feel larger. Were you looking at those designs specifically to keep the computer and accessories hidden?

Of the two, though, I like the smaller desk with the storage bench to go with it. Love the paint choice!

yea since it might end up being a mixed use room I wanted to keep the computer behind closed doors (I imagine possibly having some of our future kids toys in there since its right off of the living room.

thanks for your advice!! Chat Icon
