Need advice - sleeping question

Well, more of a not sleeping question.

Steven used to be so easy to put down. Well, now that he is more mobile he only wants to play with his feet and swing his legs back and forth in the air. Then he'll cry (or should I say ACT like he's crying) until we come in and pay attention to him then he laughs.

I really don't want to do CIO. This is not an issue of him not sleeping through the night, he's pretty OK there. He just doesn't want to GET to sleep. He would much rather bounce or play with his feet an knees.

It's cute, but I want to nip it in the bud now before it gets out of control.

What are some things to do? All of the books I read and I see out there are about newborns. He is 5 1/2 months so a lot of the things don't apply to him.

TIA

Re: Need advice - sleeping question

DD is doing the same thing lately!

What I have been doing is let her "play" a little longer. Instead of going to bed at 7...I put her in her PJ's, give her a bottle and then let her play. I put her on the floor and she giggles, plays with her feet or a toy. And withing half hour, she is rubbing her eyes and getting really tired. Then...when I put her in the crib, she only fusses for a few minutes before she actually falls asleep.

I don't know if that's the "right" thing to do...but it works Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry you're going through this too, but it is nice to know I"m not alone Chat Icon

I've tried that with him. I am not a huge stickler for "bed time" but he is visably tired but just won't go to sleep.

Last night I let him cry for not even 2 minutes. I just can't do it. Chat Icon

Any BTDT moms have any tips?

Hannah is starting this phase too. I wish I could help! Sometimes I stand over her and put my hand over legs and shhhhh her to keep her still and relaxed. That has worked, although it takes some time.

I just started doing the exact same thing. Molly used to have a bottle and go right to sleep, now at 6 monhts she is like "why sleep when we can play!". So we now have a bottle and then sit on the floor in her room and play for a little while. Then she is much more ready to go to bed.

You also may want to give DS about 5 or 10 minutes to see if he can settle himself down. Molly seems to be crying when I put her down sometimes, but it is not really a cry....she kind of moans herself to sleep. So maybe try to hold out a little longer than 2 minutes if he starts crying.

Wish I could help- we have never put Matty down for bed awake, he always passes out on the bottle/boob. Of course, that may be why he can't resettle himself when he wakes up all night....Chat Icon

But, I've noticed he starts getting drowsy as we read to him during his bedtime routine......
