Nannies: Would it bother you if they are not legal?

I'll be needing a nanny 2 days a week starting in september and my friends nanny said she could recommend a few of her friends but some are not legal. Would this stop you from hiring them if you really liked them?

Re: Nannies: Would it bother you if they are not legal?

I could get fired for this, so for me it would be a BIG issue.

if you are in any type of Law enforcement (or your husband is) I would look into how it could effect employment.

ITA. I am an attorney - any job where you are licensed by the state, etc, you need to be really careful. DH also has a job where he would be in a lot of trouble and potentially fired for hiring an illegal. We wouldn't do it.

this is what i was thinking
whenever there is a post on hiring illegals to do work there is an uproar about how they are illegal and you should only hire citizens and so on and so on so i was surprised to see a few people saying its okay for their nanny, not judging in any way you do what is right for your family, just surprised

It would bother me. I am not saying they wouldn't be a good caretaker but I would have a problem with them not being a legal citizen of this country.

For me if the person was highly recommended and was great at the job it would not bother me.

I didnt know this. I am licensed by NY State for my job. We were leaving towards not doing it but now we definitely wont. Thanks for the information.

Re: Nannies: Would it bother you if they are not legal?

I wouldn't want someone who is here illegally to be watching my kids or doing any work for me.

In my very simplified view of it, if they're willing to enter and remain here illegally, what else are they willing to do illegally? How can I trust someone who has no respect for the laws of our nation with my child's life?

Re: Nannies: Would it bother you if they are not legal?

H#LL yeah it would bother me. I want to be able to run a complete background check, check references, I want to know where you live, I want to run your license if you are going to be driving my children somewhere, I want to be able to honestly file my taxes without fear, I want to be able to find out exactly WHO you are, where you are from, and where you are going.

If someone were going to be taking care of my children in the capacity of a regular nanny, I am going to want to know that EVERYTHING is "above board". They do not necessarily have to be a NYS "certified" child care provider, but yes, they MUST be in this country legally. I agree with a PP who stated that someone who does not have any respect for our countries laws, is not trustworthy IMO. Illegal = Illegal in my book.

Just wanted to clarify, I wasn't giving legal advice (I am not an employment/tax/whathaveyou attorney) - I meant as an attorney I am licensed/regulated by the state bar and that's why I wouldn't do it. Anything I do that is illegal could result in me losing my license (DH also holds licenses with the state), so not worth it to me. HTH Chat Icon

Yes it would bother me.

My entire stance on immigration faults the employer who employs them.

My friend has au pairs who work out well. They are here legally and her children are getting exposure to other cultures and another language.
