My dogs toe nail

My dogs toe nail fell off and it looks like the nerve is left. It does not look infected, and she does not seem pain, but she does lick it from time to time.

Is there something in particular i should do for her? Do I take her to the vet? I don't want to spend the money if they are just going to tell me to keep an eye on her. I tend to take her to the vet for every little thing, so I want to make sure I am not over reacting this time. Chat Icon

Re: My dogs toe nail

This happened to my dog and it didn't stop bleeding. I dipped her paw in flour to stop it. If you think the nerve is exposed I would take it to the vet to prevent a possible infection.

Luckily it is not bleeding and is not one of her "main toes" it is the thumb looking one (I have no idea if I am making sense). Sigh....I guess I better make an appointment.

Thanks for you help!

I took her. They said that it was always a good idea to take your pet in when there is a toenail loss. She is absolutely fine, and has a bandage i have to change every 4 days for the next 10 days.

That's the dew claw and ours still has his too. Many times, they're removed as puppies. If she hurts it in the future, they may want to take it off. Minor surgery. Glad she's ok! Chat Icon
