I think that is a better plan then a lump sum. If the business does extremely well, he'll profit even more from it. I think it gives incentive and can be much more rewarding then a lump sum. If it isn't working out in a couple of months, maybe they could reassess it. Not knowing what other benefits are included with the job, I think the retirement contribution is generous.

Ditto. I'd take it in a second over a % raise.

Janet, we live in CT. Chat Icon

You are right, this can be VERY good. He gets no other benefits (besides 10 days or so of vacation). We pay for health insurance on our own. Chat Icon

That may be a good thing, how is his income reported? 1099 or W2?

It's hard to say if it's good or bad without knowing his compensation now and what the minimum and maximum he would get under this plan is. However, it sounds like she is trying to include him more in the profits of the business, and typically that is a good thing! It sounds like they are being pretty generous.

I completely understand your concerns though. Like many people, you are probably very risk averse. But I would try not to worry about it too much because it sounds like they mean to do right by your husband.

I think it's a good plan. and I can see why they're doing it. it's sort of like being in sales... you are incented to bring in more business b/c you are being paid commission.
