multiple child murders in NYC. So when is ACS going to be turned inside out?

Every week it seems there's another killing by maniac psycho "parents", some of which were already on ACS's radar! What on earth is it going to take for that agency to either be shut down and privatized, or all personnel fired in waves and be replaced. I know nothing happens fast in NYC but this is urgent.

A commenter somewhere I read brought up poor Nixzmary Brown. Remember her? At that time everyone was screaming never again. There was an "ACS overhaul". Yeah right!

I'm so disgusted with what happening with that agency. They need more funds for better training and more case workers. They are overwhelmed.
One report from the Department of Investigation said because some of the calls (regarding one of the recent cases) came in after hours and on the weekend the agency wasn't equipped to answer the calls.
Seriously?? That is unacceptable!

It is unacceptable and incredibly sad. There does need to be a serious overhaul. I saw on ABC tonight social workers have huge case loads and they don't even have enough staff to investigate. They are also pulling 2x the amount of children out of homes and into foster care this year than last but that doesn't seem to help as murders are increasing. It's hard to attract and keep good social workers because they pay them less than. 40k a year. I hope someone is working on the solution so they can save these children Chat Icon

It is so sad -- the actual need for ACS -- how anyone could ever hurt a child :/

I agree that it comes down to being overworked and underpaid. Many social workers are EXTREMELY stressed out just by the nature of their job. Couple that with low wages, possibly needing an additional part-time job just to make ends meet and it becomes disastrous.

They need fewer case loads, more money, and better technology to supervise the parents in question.

All of this. The jobs of these socials workers are so important, difficult and I would imagine, taxing on their souls to be making too little salary.

What can the average citizen do to try and get changes made? Are there petitions or marches being organized for these forgotten children?

It's so heartbreaking. Between helping the children and hopefully helping the parents, who are obviously (and hopefully) mentally unstatble. I cant believe that they are just evil. They need help. And these poor defenseless babies need help. Chat Icon

I totally remember the Nixmary Brown case every time I hear about a new case! I think to myself, "overhaul, my butt" Chat Icon
It's beyond maddening. I want to hear from the perspective of social workers in ACS on how overworked and underfunded and overwhelmed they are. I feel like there's a gag order on them...

It will unfortunately never happen because there is no profit generated by protecting our most vulnerable. So, pay will always be low and children will continue to suffer.

"The investigation found that despite ACS having the mandate, resources and information to
urgently find Jaden, ACS did not find Jaden before he was allegedly beaten into a coma on Monday,
November 28, 2016. Specifically, DOI determined that while ACS publicly stated that it only obtained the
correct address for Jaden on Monday, November 28th, ACS workers in fact had access to databases that
would have provided the correct address for Jaden as early as Saturday, November 26th, when they first
received the allegations of abuse and neglect."

Let me tell you something. Whoever was on duty that weekend, up to and including any supervisors and administrators, should be brought up on accessory to murder charges. Un f real.

These people have too many cases. Unfortunately.

They are overworked and there just are not enough of them. Period.

I don't blame them. Even if they had all the information. They have 200+ cases before this kid. I don't think even know where to begin or end....

I used to work for a contract agency for ACS. The work is insane. The expectations are outrageous and the pay is miserable. The caseloads are impossible to maintain and there are no real perks to the job. In addition, the safety of the ACS workers is rarely a priority.

It's sad that the resource are so pitiful for an agency designed to protect children. I worked in the field for about 5 years before I was so burned out I had to change careers.
