More breastfeeding help needed.

So I woke up this morning with a porn star's rackChat Icon that is hard as a rock but DD still won't latch and nurse. She seems to like to play with the nipples but not too interested in sucking for very long.

Do you think I should get a breast pump so I can start giving her my milk?

If so, any pump recommendations? What do I need to go with the pump too?

Any help would be appreaciated.

Re: More breastfeeding help needed.

Honestly, I'd rent a hospital grade pump.

I disagree with the above -- I wouldn't assume you need to pump, your body just takes time to adjust to the demand of your baby. If you pump your body will continue to think your body needs to make that extra milk. If this persists, or its impossible for baby to latch, then maybe, but not just for the first morning of feeling engorged -- you could prolong the issue by not giving your body a chance to regulate the supply.

I second the hospital grade pump. If your DD won't latch, she may never and you might end up pumping for several months like I did. In my opinion, the PIS is not sufficient for that kind of use. It's good to use when your milk supply has been established already and you are going back to work, but not when you are really trying to build up your supply to feed your baby from just your milk.

My cousin only used the PIS and was never able to make enough milk to feed her son. I know she may not have been able to anyway, but in my opinion, if she had used a hospital grade pump in the beginning, she may have had a better chance at it.

I rented the Medela Classic from a lactation consultant. They also sold me all of the accessories I needed. If you need a number of somebody I can give you the name of the woman I used. She also will see you for an appointment to try to get your baby to latch. I don't know where you're located, but she is in the Smithtown/Commack area.

You may want to express some milk by hand so your DD can latch because being engorged can make it hard for them to get a good latch. I really suggest speaking to a LC. Even if you don't do a consultation, they will spend a lot of time on the phone with you. I have an excellent one that also rents hospital grade pumps, if you need one.
FM me if you want the info.

If this is the first day that your milk is coming in, I say give yourself a quick pump, but be careful not to overstimulate!

Congrats on the big rack!!!

Re: More breastfeeding help needed.

Your milk has def come in. I would hand express a little milk to relieve the engorgement, but if do decide to fully pump you body works on supply and demand with milk production.

The more comes out, it will replace it. I pumped in the beginning since DD beat up my nipples because I didn't have help in the beginning, and i wound up with an oversupply that led to other issues for my whole BF'ing time.

Once you relieve the engorgment a bit, the baby will be able to latch much better on a softer breast/nipple.

I def recommend speaking to an LC, or browsing

www.kellymom.com

It has posts and all common issues of bf'ing especially in the beginning.
