Deposit it at your local bank that accepts international currency.

Re: Money Exchange Question

Not all branches of a bank take international currency though. The best bet is to call your local branch, ask them if they take international currency. If they don't ask them for the location to the closest branch that does.

They will charge you a fee to convert the money, but it won't be much different than any of those money exchange places (and will probably be even cheaper than an exchange store and you eliminate a step as well).

Re: Money Exchange Question

Will banks exchange currency that is no longer in circulation? Italian Lira, for example.

Re: Money Exchange Question

After poking around the internet it looks like it is money that is no longer in use in those countries. He is still going to check it out but I told him not to get his hopes up.

I don't know about the other countries, but if it's Italian Lira and not Euros, it is now useless. Most European countries are now on the Euro now and have been for a few years now. Most countries that adopted the Euro stopped using their previous currency in 2002.

For the rest, you should be able to exchange at a bank or at an exchange bureau...a lot of them are in Manhattan.

Re: Money Exchange Question

I also forgot to mention, the AmEx travel Services office outside of the Roosevelt Field mall has an exchange counter. Just know that there is a conversion fee.

Sorry... it's useless now. they had a grace period ofr while where you could pay in the old currency and receive change in the new currency, but in most European countries that are now on the Euro ended that phases in 2202-2003.
