moms who stopped BFing and went to formula please answer some questions for me! i need help!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

THANK YOU Again!!!

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

8 weeks.

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

we started with Similac Advance since it was what the hospital and it was horrible. Turns out DS had a milk allergy so he was very fussy, and broke out in a rash all over. We ended up switching to Similac Soy, which he did great on and we stayed on that.

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

I definitely had feelings of regret initially because I thought I failed myself and my baby, but now, I know it was absolutely the right choice for me and DS. He was losing weight when I was BF and I was miserable, and had lots of BF issues. he thrived beautifully on formula and it made the whole transition back to work so much easier.

THANK YOU Again!!!

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

10-11 months

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

Similac Soy (powder jind).

We tried the Similac liquid canned kind and he was in so much pain I gave it all away. He never had gas so that was excruciating to bear witness too. The soy was Perfect.

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

I didn't have a choice because I went on some medicine for 10 days. When I was done he was weaned and I didn't want to confuse him by going back. I definitely missed it and felt sad but he was fine about it so it made it easier.

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

J - started supplementing at 8 months, stopped bfing @ 11 months

M - started supplementing at 5 months, stopped bfing @ 8months.

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

J- Similac Isomil - very gassy at first, but he got used to it.

m - Similac Advanced, she was always gassy. It wasn't any worse as the changeover was slowly down over the course of months.

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

I only regret that I continued to eat like I was breasfeeding after I stopped. The weight loss from breastfeeding still amazes me.

Whatever you decide to do - continue or stop, it's always the right choice for you & for DC in my opinion.Chat Icon

1. I stopped pumping for my twins at 6 weeks. I couldn't take it anymore

2. I used Enfamil Gentilease for the longest time. They are not too gassy. Just the normal burps after they eat. (like me, LOL!)

3. I had some initial feelings of regret and I worried that I made the wrong choice. I still feel a little twinge here and there, but I just physically couldn't do it anymore with the twins. I applaud the mothers who can.

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

At 7 months i had to supplement. My supply dropped significantly bc I was preggo again. Now I only nurse morning and night, and it's really more just for comfort because practically nothing comes out

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

nestle good start supreme. perfectly smooth. she liked it, and had no issues at all. very very smooth transition

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

i had no choice. i really really wanted to bf for at least a year. i was really sad and depressed when i had to start giving her formula and felt so guilty. however, once i saw that she was fine and happy on it, i enjoyed the extra freedom, and she seems like more of a "big girl" now taking her bottles on her own, using sippy cups, etc. i really like still nursing her in the morning and at night (great bonding time, and she still looks forward to it) and bottle feeding the rest of the day. It's a great balance. Next time around, I think at around the same time I will try to pump more so that I can still give breast milk, but I can give more bottles at around 6-8 months.

11 days Chat Icon

Gentlease Enfamil (a lil gassy until then)

I had to stop due to medical condition. I regret not making it to 3months but I knew Id have to stop no matter what. I regret that folks feel its necessary to push Breastfeeding as the sole responsiblity of the mother as if I were nothing but a cow. I regret that there is such negativity about mothers who need to or want to stop breastfeeding.

1...My DS was about 6 weeks when I stopped BFing ( it wasn't my choice, I just dried up)

2...We started with Enfamil and he was really gassy, so we switched to Enfamil prosobi with Lipil. After the switch, he was fine!

3...I wish that I could have BF longer, but I do not regret one moment of it!

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

With DS I supplemented occasionally from about 2 months on. Stopped BFing at about 6 months.

With DD I only BFed for 3 weeks Chat Icon

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

With DS had absolutely no issues with any formula. Used both Enfamil Lipil and Good Start when supplementing, and he did fine on both. When we switched over completely we used Good Start for a couple months, then started using Target brand. Never had any issues.

With DD we are using Good Start. She has been FF only for about a week and a half now, and for the past few days she has been slightly constipated - but today she did a HUGE soft poop on her own! So I think the issue is resolving itself.

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

DS never really liked nursing - I was the one who was committed to continuing. But when I went back to work at 3 months, my body didn't respond well to the pump, so my supply suffered and eventually petered out. I was VERY upset at first, but switching to formula ended up being the best decision!!! It allowed me to spend more time with him, and made life a gazillion times easier!!

With DD it wasn't my choice to stop... she wouldn't nurse and was dropping weight. Once again, I was forced to pump to keep up my supply, but my body just doesn't respond to it. I pump out nothing and my supply dries up Chat Icon Again I was VERY upset, but I am (almost) over it now and I'm enjoying the freedoms of FFing Chat Icon

Re: moms who stopped BFing and went to formula please answer some questions for me! i need help!

I stopped BFing when DD was 5 weeks old. She got pumped breastmilk and formula. by 11 weeks she was off breast milk and on formula only.

I started her on Enfimil Gentlease but switched due to reflux to Similac Alimentium - She did great on it.

Did I regret stopping? Not in the least, in fact I felt a huge sense of relief and a huge weight taken off me when I stopped. We were both happier with the bottle. I will honestly say BFing was completely tramatic for me.

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable? we started her on similac advance early shield then we switched her similac sensitive which she is so much better on and not gassy

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?
I do have my days that I wish I didn't stop. But it was starting to get very stressful and she was hungry and I wasn't producing enough. Plus she wasn't really gaining weight.

I also pumped for alittle bit but not enough to stock up or anything. But now she is doing great on formula I'm more relaxed and ok with my decision to stop. I went in with a positive attitude that if I can breastfeed great and if not that is ok too.

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?
I began to supplement at 1 month and completely stopped at 5 months.

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?
I used the Similac advanced. He did fine but I think it's because I started him on it so early!

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?
It did make me sad to stop and I missed it, but I do think it was the right choice. It was just too hard and time consuming for me. I work full time and crazy hours and would rather leave work early to see DS...then spend the time at work to pump!

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

He was never EBF and was always partially FF, but he was on formula exclusively by 3.5months

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

Enfamil Lipil - no problems at all. He had a little reflux which was easily solved with some rice in the bottle as per pedi

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

Right decision for us. I had guilt about it for a while but we were both so miserable and BFing wasnt getting any easier. I had supply issues and DS is tongue tied so he was unable to latch.

i just saw your reply on another thread about BFing all day while your 2 year old watches dora and plays with toys...

i experienced the same thing, my two are 21 months apart. it made me SO sad... Chat Icon

that's one of the major reasons why i gave up BFing after pumping on a reasonable schedule didn't work out. sure, i could have "power pumped" - basically pumped constantly - and kept up my supply until DD caught onto nursing.

but i just couldn't justify not using that time to spend with my son. in my opinion, he needs my time a heck of a lot more than my daughter needs my breast milk. so while i do still mourn not BFing my daughter, i know it was the right decision for my entire family.

Chat Icon thanks! yes..this is a big reason why i am having a very hard time doing it this time. with my DD i BF'd for 10 months and hung in there. i know it gets easier..but this time i have to go back to work (in NOV) and am dead set against pumping. i hate it. so thats it for me-just hope it goes smoothly!
thanks all for the respsonses!! i am so grateful!

6 months but started supplementing around 5

Good Start Natural Cultures-he did really well but I did it gradually

I do regret it both for the benefits and for the weight loss! It was a PITA tho since I was exclusively pumping once they were 8 weeks or so. (I had twins) Then around 14 weeks one of my boys was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and had to go on amino acid formula. So my supply dipped alot.

Re: moms who stopped BFing and went to formula please answer some questions for me! i need help!

1 - I started introducing formula around 6 weeks b/c I knew when I went back to work I wouldn't be pumping and I would just be BF in the AM and after work and the PM.

2 - We used Enfamil Gentelease it def. helped DD with gas (she never seemed upset by it)

3 - I stopped totally BF at 11 months. I was only feeding in the AM and supp. after that feeding so she really wasn't getting much. Plus she was weaning herself also. I do miss the bonding, but DD is sooo busy now I know it would be hard to keep her at the boob lol

Re: moms who stopped BFing and went to formula please answer some questions for me! i need help!

DS was 10 months.

We made the switch VERY gradually over a period of over a month switching a few ounces at a time since DS has a very sesnsitive digestive system. He did fine. There were of course issues as we adjusted (some constipation etc.) but he adjusted fast. We used Similac Advance RTF (tried a bunch and this worked best for us). We made the switch to bottles at the same time which was a huge mistake I will not repeat with #2. Getting him to take the bottle and the formula wasn't easy (partially why it took months).

Didn't regret it AT all. Was very emotional and upset at the time but knew it was the right thing for us. Any older and I just didn't feel comfortable - he was getting to the point where he clearly understood the situation and was asking for it and I just didn't want him to be attached to it as he got older - just didn't feel right about it. There were a million other reasons I stopped as well.

HTH!

Re: moms who stopped BFing and went to formula please answer some questions for me! i need help!

1. How old was your DC when you stopped and switched to formula?

I still nurse for 2 feedings a day, but the other 3-4 are formula now. I started introducing formula almost a month ago (DD was 7 months).

2. What formula did you use and how did it go? meaning did your DC get very gassy/uncomfortable?

When DD was a newborn, we gave her Enfamil while waiting for my milk to come in. She was a NIGHTMARE on it. We've been using the Good Start Protect Plus and she's doing really well on it!

3. Did you regret stopping BFing or was it the right choice for you/DC?

The only reason I stopped EBF is because I'm going back to work next week. I am a teacher and pumping at work is difficult, to say the least. If I were going to SAH, I would definitely continue EBF. But I definitely don't regret switching her to formula, I have a new-found freedom now when we're out in public! Chat Icon

I stopped when DS was three weeks old. My milk supply was practically non-existent and DS would not latch.

We started with Enfamil Lipil and then had to switch to Alimentum- DS had reflux. Alimentum worked great!

I did feel regret, felt like I should have tried harder. But DS is a happy and very healthy 18 month old. I also liked watching DH and grandparents giving him his bottles, they really enjoyed being able to bond with him also by feeding him tooChat Icon
