Moms who are teachers

I was wondering how many of you would teach part-time if you could, in order to have more time home with your children...but still maintain your career?

Other states like FL and CA allow teachers to "job share". Two teachers literally fill one position and each get to work several days a week.

I now I am only fantasizing here, but if your district would allow job sharing would you be on board?

I would love to petition for this in my district for our next contract. I know of so many mothers in my district alone that would love this opportunity. It would also open more jobs for teachers struggling to find positions.

Thoughts???

I'm not a teacher, but one of my friends was a 4th grade teacher (Board of Ed), and is going back part time this fall as a literacy coach for teachers. She will work 3 days a week. Maybe something like this could be an option for you.

I do have literacy certification, so it could be an option. These opportunities rarely pop up in my district though.

Since I could be home every day by 3:30 I would still stay full time for the $ and my own sanity, Chat Icon if the possibility opened up.

I would love to job share. I think it would be a great option and I would love to have more time with DS but also some keep some time as a professional.

It is really too bad that there are so few options like that out there for working moms. I think a lot of teachers would be interested.

I know my district talks every now and then about starting an in-district daycare. Something like that combined with job-sharing positions would be amazing.

Maybe someday.

I would do it without a moment's hesitation.

I believe Pat-Med has job sharing, but I'm not sure. I know they they used to do it but I'm not sure if it's still an option.

If I could afford to I would, but it would never fly in my district.

I would love to do it too! Just as long as I would be able to work enough hours so that I could get health benefits and I would so be there!!!

If I could do it financially I would do it in a heartbeat. For me though I would have to move districts. I have a 40 minute commute so to work PT there probably would not make sense.

Sorry to crash here, but my district does have it -- but just at the elementary level. Doesn't really help the secondary teachers much. I get the impression that it's a school-by-school decision (if that's even possible)...

it's a good idea...i do however feel lucky that as school employee, the work day is so short, DH gets home so late and goes in so early with his job. i also work in the same town so that makes a difference. i will be able to see DD from like 2:45 til bedtime. i am a school librarian though so it is a bit different. one of the nice things about being a librarian is that you can also work p/t in a public library for a very decent salary. i know this isn't completely related to your post though-sorry to have rambled on!
you should def try to see if your district is open to it!

Re: Moms who are teachers

I could have a part-time option, as a speech pathologist, though there aren't any non-full time in my district. I would only consider it if I could keep the benefits and NYS retirement. But, my administration wouldn't go for this.

I would LOVE to be able to do this. We need my salary right now, but in a few months we will be in a better position and part time would be wonderful.

Re: Moms who are teachers

this is totally the reason why im dragging my feet in finding a f/t job (not that there are many available) but why im continuing to sub..

I love the best of both worlds, I sub part time.
but subbing is so dead-end and just not challenging, so to have a REAL teaching job part time would be a dream come true!

Ive thought about this many times.
I almost interviewed for a p/t position last year, and then cancelled the interview Chat Icon because I didnt want to jump in just yet.

Im glad im not the only one that would love this Chat Icon I thought I was selfish to even want a better schedule than teachers already have. Chat Icon

(NOT saying the day is over at 3pm!)

Re: Moms who are teachers

Honestly, I don't know if I would do it....this summer, I sort of did that with summer school. I worked 8-12 and then picked her up at 1 and the rest of the day was for us. It was tough. It's hard to get a routine going when you're splitting the day with someone.
It's a tough question.
