Re: mom's of children with developmental delays

What is the delay?
Pervasive Developmental Disorder / Autism Spectrum Disorder (speech, cognitive, fine motor, social)

When was the diagnosis?
"at risk" PDD at 18 months old, PDD/ASD at 30 months (2.5)

Who first saw the delay?
Me mostly, very concerned about his language and comprehension. Told my ped. started neuro evals, was told he was having seizures, then that he was deaf, maybe a brain tumor, and when it was none of the above the stupid neurologist says "So, have you looked into Autism?"

Re: mom's of children with developmental delays

What is the delay: speech

When was it dx: both of my children that had/have speech delay were both dx the yr turing 3. Neither of them qualified for EI

Who saw the delay: my first son my family noticed it because they couldn't understand him but I could. My 2nd son I noticed as well as my family. I'm sure many people noticed it but just never said anything.

What services did I get: My 1st son had speech 2x a wk at our home for 1yr. My 2nd son is now receiving speech 3x's a day at their facility because I felt he would be to distracted at home.

oldest Chat Icon at first ... Autism

walking, fine and gross motor, had weaknesses in muscle strength, gravitational insecurities, sensory issues ect...
preschool noticed it first
now at 9 he is "healed" due to EI , only has social issues and certain "quirkiness" to him his diagnosis is Aspergers
he had pt, ot, speech, sensory intergration, and social group therapy, as well as individual counseling

middle sonChat Icon PDD pervasive developmental disorder
had delays in Speech, fine and gross motor skills,
got speech and occupational therapy..
i noticed it first.
i can truley say he is "cured " of the PDD.. is very social and no delays anymore.. he is 6.
he is now diagnosed with ADHD and severe Anxiety disorder

youngestChat Icon delays in speech and eye contact, also didn't answer to his name
i noticed it first but didn't take him to the neurologist until he had a seizure at 15 months.
diagnosis PDD... (but i don't believe it and neither do 2 other therapists that evaluated him after EI services)
recieved speech and had a special ed teacher and tested ok at 2 years old.. in fact way ahead of his age group!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon i have no more fears that he is falling on the "spectrum"

1. The delay DS has is physical & gross motor. He's been working with a pt for about 2 or 3 weeks now. EI is amazing so far.
When DS was younger our ped. told us he has low muscle tone. With that and the fear of standing alone, pulling up, etc. EI has been helping him through along with mommy and daddy.

2. At the 15 month check up, I asked the Dr. all about EI and we all agreed on an evaluation.

3. I noticed the delay. I worked in daycare. Yes, you are Not supposed to compare children, but, when your class was your DS' age, I had a gut feeling. He wasn't doing what my whole class was doing at his age.

4. EI for Physical Therapy and a Special Ed Teacher for gross/motor skills.

Hope this helps.Chat Icon

Being Evaluated for speech at 18 months.

I don't have a child that needed services, but our good friends have a child on the PDD spectrum. She had to push at 2 years to have him evaluated.

They just moved near us in Suffolk and she says the services in Suffolk are tremendous and is overwhelmed (with joy) with all the help (she said Nassau is not as generous with services) In the few months, he has improved greatly!

Re: mom's of children with developmental delays

What is the delay?
Speech

When was this diagnosed?
I had him evaulated at 21 months by EI, he did not qualify. Had him evaluated again at 24 months and he did qualify for services.

Who first saw the delay?
We noticed that he wasn't talking, not even babbling, when he should have been.

What services did you get?
Ry is currently getting speech and special instruction services to help him develop his play skills to be more on par with children his age (pretend play, etc.)

Re: mom's of children with developmental delays

What is the delay? Speech primarily, but was receptive and expressive language too

When was this diagnosed? 15 months-they labeled him with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. About 75% of the sensory problems have disappeared but some remain. We are told that as his speech continues to improve, they will slow even more...

Who first saw the delay? Both DH & I. What led to us getting help was the fact that he did strange things with his eyes-keeping his eyes fixated on an object as he ran past it...throwing toys to hear the loud crash it made, nonstop activity morning to night...

What services did you get? Early Intervention..I live in Virginia, go throught the PIE program (parent infant education).

He has speech 1x/week, OT 1x/week and a parent educator 1x/week (although we are prob stopping this part soon, seems to be a waste of time).

We wanted more OT/speech however they honestly feel this is all he needs right now. I am thinking now they may be right as the progress has been steady and promising. He will start preschool in september for other children with delays...he will have some OT and speech there. We don't know what the future holds but as of now we all feel very optimistic for Johnny's future. He has come quite a long way in 5 months of therapy!!! I don't know what I would have done without EI.

So glad that they are doing so well. EI really makes a huge difference. I am so glad that I didn't ignore the issues with Ryan, and him put in EI right away. I can already see a difference!

Re: mom's of children with developmental delays

What is the delay?
Receptive and expressive language, and cognitive delay.

When was it diagnosed?
Lance was evaluated by EI at 15 months old. At 17 months he was seen by a Neurologist who diagnosed him with PDD. 34 days later he was seen by a psychologist through EI, he did an ADOS, and told us that Lance does not have PDD.

Who first saw the delay?
I did.

What services did you get?
Lance has special education 2X per week, soon to be 3. He also gets speech 2X per week. We will be getting an OT eval. soon for sensory.
