Moms of Baby Boys - I have a wet diaper issue

My DS is a bit just under 3 weeks old, and every time he has a wet diaper, we have to change everything - clothes, swaddle, sheets - occasionally even his socks. Sometimes it shoots over his shoulder and just wets his back - sometimes its the front... but he is always wet. There is no wet diaper that isn't accompanied by a complete wardrobe change. Today he has been through about 7 outfits. Is this normal for a boy? Should I make the diapers even tighter?

Don't get me wrong - I'm glad he is getting enough fluids, but this can't be right.

We tried huggies and pampers so far - he is average size - about 7.5 lbs.

Any advice?

Are you using newborn diapers? If so, Try Size 1.

I agree with Julz, sometimes the diaper will look big, but he needs the absorbancy.

I never went through outfits like that with DS.

you might want to make the diaper tighter. Try to point his Wee-Wee down when you put a new diaper on. Make sure the diaper is completely open (the little ruffles are out around his butt)

Hope this helps!!!

Yes we are only using newborn ones -

I was going to see if I could find smaller ones... I never thought of getting bigger diapers.

Thanks I'll try it. Chat Icon

Oh - I never messed with the wee wee either.

I leave it due north.

This is key...must ALWAYS be pointed down. I learned that the hard way...lol.

VERY VERY important!!!!

My DS was 6 lbs 15 ounces when he was born and we've used huggies newborn size for a while.

If he's soaking through the diaper, it's because it's not tight enough or because the penis isn't pointed down. Chat Icon

yeah so did we and thats exactly why he keeps leaking through. Chat Icon

It's not the diaper that is the problem, it's the direction of the penis. Chat Icon

Dont go by the size/weight listed on the box of the diaper. I find that they are not accurate.
DS was born 7 pounds he went right into size 1 swaddlers.
And yes point the weewee down, it helps.
Good luck!

Re: Moms of Baby Boys - I have a wet diaper issue

Are his legs thin? In my case, we had a lot less of a problem when his legs filled out a little. It did not even seem that it was leaking from the legs but I now believe that was the problem. We also had times when it leaked in front and times when it leaked in back. Between that and the reflux, we really changed his clothes a lot. If I did not just love to pick new outfits for him, I would have gone out of my mind!!!

Babies are all shaped differently, just like people fit into clothes differently.

Are you using a lot of diaper ointment? That can make the diapers less absorbent and cause a ton of leaks.

Yes, make sure you point it down. We had that problem for a few days, and when I started pointing it down, he stopped soaking his clothes.Chat Icon

Oh that is probably most of the issue then. You gotta face him south or it will leak everywhere.Chat Icon

Had the same problem with DS until we went up a diaper size. I thought he was fitting perfectly into newborns, but it turned out he needed 1s. Never had a leak after that.
