Mommies how long till you let "other" kids around your newborn?

DH and I went to an infant parenting class tonight and were told to keep other children away for 8 weeks. That seems a bit much for me. I have a lot of neices and nephews that are dying to meet my little guy when he comes.

I let my nephews near DD almost right away I just made sure they all washed their hands and didnt cough on her
I also have 2 older children so there was no choice to let other kids near the baby

Re: Mommies how long till you let "other" kids around your newborn?

I am one of the "few" people who followed my ped's advise on not letting my DS around school age kids until he was 8 weeks old.

I waited 8 weeks. At 8.5 weeks, I let kids around him but still not touch him. Kids puts there hands "anywhere" so I don't let them touch him.

The main reason for waiting 8 weeks, is that if your DC has a fever of 100.4+, your DC will mostly go to the hospital with a spinal, catheter, etc...

I was up in the air...the nurses and drs advised no kids...but my nieces were coming to town just to see Josh. THANK GOD I did not let them near him other then viewing sessions.

One had Scarlett Fever the other had the flu and a case of impetago(sp)...both looked fine on day 1, but the end of the trip they had both been to the ER.

I agree. We did the same.

Even now I am leery of very young kids touching because they can be rough w/o realizing it.

from day 1. i have a 6 year old. school was in. she just had to wash her hands and be in clean clothes. i also took him everywhere...field day, famiily picnic night....i just kept him in the stroller and my stroller has a built-in "net" so no one could touch him. as you can see, i took him to outdoor events...had the weather been cooler and things were inside, i might have passed.

What age kids? My neice who was 18 months old did not come up when her mom did b/c she is a little germ factory.

But my two SILs and BIL who are 16, 13 and 12 held him the day he came home. They washed their hands before each time they held him.

My nieces ages 11, 10, 9, 7 and 6 all came within a week of her birth and held her.

I'm part of the "few" too Sophie Chat Icon I didn't let any other children around DD until after she had her 1st round of shots.

Re: Mommies how long till you let "other" kids around your newborn?

My nieces and nephews came to the hospital to see him. They didn't touch him though.

Then we also let them hold him - and touch his little feet (if they were too little to hold him)

THEN - he got a cold - so for the last three weeks before he got his shots we established a "look but don't touch" rule. That's been fine.

I told one of my nieces the other day that she can look but can't touch - and she turned to me and said "But how come you are touching him then?" -- gotta love what little kids say! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have 2 older children so they were all over the baby when I came home w/ him. The 1st 2wks I usually make any child that held the baby wash their hands but I'm really not that strick about keeping people away from them. All 3 of my boys are healthy Chat Icon

DD-Look right away, touch within a couple weeks only after washing hands.

That is what my DH is scared of. We have 5 nieces and nephews that vary from 13 mos old to 8 yrs old. The rest are over 16 yrs old.

My niece (who was 1 1/2 when DS was born) came up the next day after I had DS, so there were children around DS right away.

If you have other children at home of course you cannot keep them away. We don't this will be our first however my family has lot of kids. The hospital will not let them come up but I don't know what to do when I get home.

I have a very strict "look but don't touch" policy with kids as well. It is one of the few things that I am actually neurotic about. Toddlers & school-aged kids carry tons of germs & explore and touch EVERYTHING. I do not need DS being exposed to such a huge amount of germs all at once.
