Martin Luther King through the eyes of a kindergartner

We received an update about what the kindergartners learned in January. I asked, "The paper said that you learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. What did you learn? Who is he?"

"Oh, that was a guy who didn't like the law. He was a law breaker. He wanted to drink out of a fountain - and they wouldn't even let him! There were signs saying he couldn't drink out of a fountain when he was little. And if I was little when he was little I would be able to drink out of the fountain only sometimes."

"Sometimes?"

"Yes because the Junior King could not. And I could only sometimes because I have white skin & brown hair. Your hair is even darker so you would have to walk an even longer way to drink out of a water fountain or maybe you should bring a bottle of water with you."

"So he didn't think the law was fair and he tried to change it?"

"Yes. Also his school didn't have ANY GOOD books. He had to sit there & listen to the teacher talk and talk and talk - and he had to wait forever to get a good book. My school has good books & I only have to wait until Library day but poor that poor little guy had to sit around doing nothing - AND he didn't even have a good playground. They probably didn't even have a slide!"

"So he wanted everyone to be treated equally no matter what the color of their skin was?"

"and HAIR...weren't you listening to ME?"

"I think it's only skin color, Joe."

"You weren't in the classroom when the teacher was talking. How would you even know that?"

"Maybe you could ask your teacher tomorrow. I read about Martin Luther King Jr. He was a very brave man that stood up for people - and it was about skin color."

"Well he didn't have a gun."

"No he didn't."

Chat Icon Thank you for the laugh! That was an adorable conversation. Did it take all your strength to not laugh thru it?

As soon as my husband got in the car, I said "Ask him about Martin Luther King!"

One of these days I'll figure out how to get video off of my camera & I'll post my interview about the Easter Bunny with Maddie & Joe....and how he has to make the chocolate underground or it would melt.

He actually sounds like he got a lot out of it. It went over a lot of my kids' heads, and I teach 1st grade, but special ed. Most of them were just obsessed with the fact that he was killed.

One of my students, to this day, calls him George Lincoln!

I guess we've been learning about too many important people lately!
