Looks like this board may be my new home--and an HSG question

hi ladies

this is my "ttc" name. i know many of you in "real life" but i'm staying hidden for now. any of you that know this name, i'm kindly asking you not to mention it.

well...i went to my gyno today for my yearly exam and to tell her i'm concerned. we've been TTC for about 6 months and i'm using the CBEFM. my cycles are like clockwork and my ovulation is like clockwork. (at least the hormone levels are). we're doing everything when we're supposed to but i just *know* (have a strong suspicion) that something may be wrong.

she agreed that with my regularity and use of the monitor something *could* be wrong. of course, it might just be taking a while. but i don't want to take chances--i want to rule things out

so DH has a script for a semen analysis. he'll be going monday hopefully. and i will be going to get an HSG probably next week.

i've been searching the boards about HSG because my doctor told me very little except that it might hurt. but how long is it? can i go to work after? if my day 1 is monday (probably), when would i go?

you seem like a wonderful group of ladies. i hope i get to know each of you better through this journey. Chat Icon

I felt no pain with mine, the whole thing took all of 5-7 minutes. The radiologist who did mine was AWESOME. I really thought it was nothing and could have gone back to work, but I had planned on a half day - went to work in the morning, had the hsg at 2pm and figured I'd just go home after that. I ended up going right to the supermarket, I was totally fine. I recommend advil before if you can.

Pretty much the same for me. I had mine in the morning and from door to door it was about 45 min. I had some cramping afterwards, but nothing worse then AF cramps. Good luckChat Icon

Honestly, it wasn't all that bad, and I'm the biggest baby you will meet when it comes to anything medical related. From the time I was called into the exam room until it was over, was MAYBE 10 minutes. The anticipation is the worst part. The procedure itself is quick and over before you know it.

I took the day off, for two reasons..

1. I had taken a xanex prior to because my nerves were completly shot

2. My appointment was at 10:30 am on the eve of Yom Kippur in which I would have taken a half day from work anyway.

My radiologist only does the HSG between CD6 - CD10

Most HSG's are done between CD6-11 and there is relatively little pain. I had no problem with mine and did go back to work. I just took a long lunch cuz I had to drive far to get mine done.
I recommend taking 2 advil beforehand to reduce any discomfort you may have, but other than that you should have no trouble whatsoever.

My HSG wasn't bad at all. I took a few advils before and was fine. Nothing more than some AF type cramping.

However I've heard that if you have a blockage you may have some pain so I think it's smart to make sure you take Advil or Motrin before hand. It's a relatively short procedure and for me they told me right then and there that everything was clear. Good Luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Same for me on all accounts (except going back to work because I had mine later in the day)

I had taken the day off but didn't need to. One quick, sharp pain was all I had. Took a few Advils beforehand, wasnt' a big deal for me...but everyone is different. Good luck!

Mine was painful too but only for a minute or two during the procedure. After that, no problems and I went back to work. Bring a pad, the dye leaks out afterwards.

Good luck -

Me too... First it took them three tries to get the catheter in correctly - which didn't hurt - just a little unsettling. But after that I started to get a little cramping and then it got a little worse. But it was over pretty quickly.

I went on CD8 and took 3 Advil about an hour before. I didn't take the day off...

Good Luck.

thanks for all the replies ladies! Chat Icon

what do they do with a catheter? the only time i've heard of a catheter is for urine.

i was told i can't make an appointment until i get my period--which is probably tomorrow. DH is going on wed to get the SA. hopefully i can go the tues after that for the HSG, which would be day 9. they want me to go 3 days after my period ends, but that will a sunday.

i still can't believe this all is happening. Chat Icon
