LI child welfare agencies remove more kids from parents

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/longislandlife/ny-likids0731,0,837322.story

Long Island's child welfare agencies have removed 28 percent more children from their parents' custody this year, a spike that bucks a statewide trend and that some county officials say was a reaction to the drowning deaths of three New Cassel children in February.

The upswing in removals was most pronounced in Nassau County, where 125 children were placed into foster care during the first six months of this year, a 69 percent increase compared with the same period in 2007. Suffolk had a 15 percent increase. Both counties had their highest numbers in March, the month following the Feb. 24 drowning deaths of three New Cassel children -- Jewell Ward, 6, and Michael, 5, and Innocent Demesyeux, 18 months. Their mother, Leatrice Brewer, is charged with murdering them.

Other child protection agencies statewide trended in the opposite direction, as removals fell by 4 percent in the first six months of 2008. Amid Long Island's foster care surge, child abuse and neglect complaints also increased, but not as much, going up 9 percent this year.

Interesting and scary (on many different levels) at the same time.

I am concerned with the increase because I worry about the comments made in the article....case workers being overly cautious and not wanting to be a scapgoat. I do understand that mentality - compeletely - but to err on any side means that someone (the child) suffers in some way. I totally get the 'dammed if you do, dammed if you don't' comment too.

It's an imperfect system in an imperfect world. You look at your own child and your own situation and things like this seem so foreign...so difficult to comprehend. But it's a sad reality.

I worry about all these cuts coming about soon and how that will change things for a system trying to improve Chat Icon

I understand their move but I also think about those kids in foster care lately that were starved, kept in closests, etc.. And the agency said they did not have the resources to check all the families.

Which one is better?
